microsoft account profile picture won't remove

Trying to remove my Microsoft profile picture and put it back to just the original blue circle with my initials or the abstract figure head.

In my account online, there is no image. On my PC the image remains, and in the settings there is no option to remove the photo - only to browse for or take a new one.

I went into C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures and deleted the picture there. No change. Restarted my PC and still change. The image still shows up in the far left of the start menu, the sign in screen, top right corner of Office apps, etc.

Any other tips for removing this photo?

Hi Joey. I'm Greg, awarded MVP for eleven years, Volunteer Moderator, and Independent Advisor here to help you until this is resolved.

That's not the exact path. To make it easier copy and paste this into File Explorer address box after checkmarking Hidden Items on View tab:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures

Find and delete the unwanted picture.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thanks so much for replying. It looks like you meant to include a file path in your reply but maybe it got skipped. What is the correct file path?

No problem.

Interesting result, when I pasted that file path into the address box but it returned the same file path that I had originally, which I deleted the picture from earlier today..

In that case the picture is likely stored in your online MS Account here:
https://account.microsoft.com/profile

Click on your picture, then Remove Photo.

I'm really sorry, I feel like quite the newbie here. Hate to be difficult.

There is no picture on my online MS account either. xD   Never was.

The profile picture remains on my PC in places such as the far left of the start menu and in Office apps like Word:

The solution could just be something silly at this point like another reboot maybe.

This isn't your fault. You've done everything correctly. It may be due to corruption in the account. We see this here every day. Do you have other issues?

Go into WIndows Settings > Accounts > Your Info. Is your email address shown there? If not then look for the link to Sign in with a Microsoft Account instead.

Add your MS Account email address, then set a Profile Picture in your MS Account.

If you don't want to do that then provide a new Picture in your Windows Settings > Your Info > Create your Picture.

Once you provide a new picture hopefully the old one will be removed.
