Microphone not picking up voice in Settings + Certain Apps? (works in Discord)

Hello,

Having an annoying issue I cannot seem to troubleshoot.

I have an ASUS ROG Strix B650E-I motherboard with a Drop PC38X headset. It's connected to the Front Speaker Out & Mic In Analog ports on the back of the motherboard as expected.

Effectively, colleagues are telling me I'm quiet on applications such as Teams to the point where they can't hear me. When I go to Windows Settings > Sound, I can barely generate mic input without shouting. However, if I go over to Discord, I'd say the headset works perfectly with good sensitivity.

What could be causing the issue? Is it a visual glitch within the Settings screen that's leading me on a goose chase?

There's nothing with the Asus Realtek Audio Console that I can identify that's the cause, using Microphone Boost seems to make no difference.

The webcam microphone I have seems to be picking up voice just fine, for reference it's USB-connected (unsurprisingly).

What I've tried so far:

  • Re-installing drivers, both Windows suggested and the Realtek drivers from the Asus website.

  • Using the Troubleshooter within sound settings found no issue.

  • Moved from the split port to a combi port on the front of the case - no change.

  • Toggled settings within the Realtek Audio Console

  • Restarted the Windows Audio service multiple times

  • Removed potentially conflicting software such as Steel Series GG with it's Sonar functionality.

I've ordered an adapter to take the spilt analog and adapt it to USB to see if that makes a difference.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and potentially help!

Hello , sorry about your problems. My name is Marco and I will do my best to help you.

In Windows 10, there are privacy settings that can block apps from accessing your microphone. Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and make sure that Teams is allowed to access your microphone.

You can also try disconnecting or disabling your webcam if the headset is working. There may be a conflict between the two microphones.

It's possible that other software on your system could be interfering with the microphone sensitivity. You mentioned removing Steel Series GG, but it's worth checking if there are any other conflicting software or background processes that could be affecting the microphone.
To check this, you can do a clean boot.
A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so you can determine if a background program is interfering with your game or program.
This is similar to starting Windows in Safe Mode, but allows you to better control which services and programs run during startup to help you isolate the cause of a problem.

Here's how to do it: https://support.microsoft.com/topic/proc%C3%A9d...

Thanks for the advice!

I can see that Teams is accessing the microphone, any application on my device should be able to so that's verified.

Doing the Clean Boot as suggested still persists with the issue, even with only the Windows Services enabled I'm still seeing the same behavior.

Anything else that might work?

Have you deactivated the webcam to see if the cam microphone conflicts with your headset?

Correct, I already did that.

For reference, if I do a mic test I can see 0-3% Mic Sensitivity recorded. With the Analog to USB converter, it's now registering 8%.

Some improvement but still not high enough in my eyes given the position of the mic and how Discord records the sensitivity and subsequent volume in comparison.

I don't see an option for Audio Enhancements" per the link you sent.

Under "Custom" there's a tick-box for AGC, however, whether that's on or off seems to make no difference in my testing. Have also tried toggling the exclusive mode as suggested previously.
