Microphone issue on Windows 11

Hi,

I'm having an issue with the Microphone on my Windows 11 laptop. When I go to Microphone settings -> Get started , I immediately get brought to the Troubleshooter. When I click through to say Cortana can't hear me, and set up Microphone, I get an error saying 'Your microphone might need to be setup - Not Fixed'.

Please help!

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike.
I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

Is your microphone in a headset, or is it a standalone microphone?

If it's a microphone in a headset, does your headset have 2 jack connectors P2 (two black or white lines) or a single jack connector P3 (three black or white lines)?

Also. What is the manufacturer and model of your computer?
If you prefer, you can send a screenshot of your system information.
- Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.
Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Hi David,

It's the microphone from a headset which is working on my other laptop. They are skullcandy headphones with an inbuilt mic, 1 jack in use to connect with the laptop.

See below for MSinfo output.

Thanks

Thanks for the screenshot.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the specs for this notebook.

Can you tell me if the audio connectors on the notebook are separate (one for headphones and one for microphone) or a single connector (for headset)?

Thanks for the clarifications.

Usually, the audio driver comes with the Audio Manager, which is hidden in the system tray.

Open the Audio Manager and look for your computer's connector settings. With the headset connected, click on the connector for the headset and specify that you have a headset connected.
Then, see if your headset microphone will be recognized by Windows.

Thanks David, I went into the audio manager and went to inputs. When I went to the microphone and ran a test on the microphone, it doesn't record with or without headphones. I then went to input devices to run the troubleshooter and got the below (note I've ensured all windows updates have been applied).

In this case, do the following:

Download the latest audio driver available from the support area of your computer manufacturer's website, uninstall the current driver, restart your computer, and install the driver you downloaded.
You should be able to uninstall the audio driver in "Settings > Apps > Apps & features/Installed apps".

Preferably, look for the audio driver for Windows 11. But if it's not available, download the latest one for Windows 10.

Can you send the link to the page where you downloaded the driver?

Also, send a screenshot of the devices under the category "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in Device Manager.
1. Press "Windows + X" and select "Device Manager";
2. Expand "Sound, Video and Game Controllers".
Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.
