Yes, We recommend using Windows Defender only. 3rd party Antiviruses can have issues as newer feature updates are released sometimes.
You can consider keeping malwarebytes free as an on-demand scanner if you need(not necessary)
Working on IST
Always include PC Specifications with the problem. Additionally, ensure all the latest quality updates have been installed.

No expert in Forums where we see the most cases (by the thousands) recommends Avast, AVG. Norton or McAfee, but we have solved many problems over the years by having them uninstalled.
I would uninstall any 3rd party antivirus and try running only built-in Defender which gives adequate protection, least issues, and is from Microsoft who knows how to protect their OS best.
If you want the best on-demand scanner install and run a full scan with Malwarebytes free scanner: https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/
You can turn off the free trial at any time in the app's Settings > Accounts.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
If you receive a popup asking if this solved your problem please ignore it, as it will remove my ability to help you and others may also not help. Please wait until after the issue is resolved to answer the popup or mark your question answered to help others.

In general: McAfee is as good as any other well known Anti Virus program but is known to "require numerous services and running processes that consume a lot of system resources"...
Source and more info how to uninstall McAfee etc in this post of quietman7 - MVP.

Hi Bob
Yes, absolutely you should remove McAfee, it gets in everywhere in your PC and will slow your new PC down a lot . . .
Use the official McAfee Removal Tool to get that off your PC, it is very hard to remove correctly -

Windows 10 now contains a full and competent Security Suite . . .
Windows Defender has, over the last few years become a fully featured Security solution
It is on a par with paid for Anti-virus software, the virus definitions are updated regularly, it will not slow our PC down, works well with Edge and it is Free
Defender now has a new feature - Controlled Folder Access, which protects against a ransomware attack
Honestly, you do not need more protection than Defender can supply . ..
