laptop won't update from windows 8 to 8.1

i never updated for 3 months although it asked each day, then i decided to update to 8.1 but it kept failing until it disappeared and i couldn't find it again,

I then restored my laptop to factory and installed all windows updates that could be found, then i tried to update to windows 8.1 through the store but it keeps failing, so when it popped up asking me to update i tried that, but after a restart it hasn't worked and after a few minutes it comes up again asking me to update to 8.1, there is only so many times i can restart the computer and it fail before i give up on windows.

the update was installed on my desktop but not working on my laptop, i see loads of others with this issue but not 1 resolved answer, please help.

there are many more successful updates but stopped there for now, if any more info is required please ask,

Answer

sorry I did state earlier windows (clean) just edited my last post, but nevermind I solved it

Edit:- and with creating a usb(backup), which should be created with any new system on 1st use, I have, but it is a factory backup, and still wouldn't solve the 8.1 issue, Clean boot with just windows services also failed to solve the issue,

Thanks Smitty for your effort with this,

All done and working now, took me 5 days with very little help from Microsoft and acer live chat could only say phone a number as they know more than us, lol, so do I apparently, GIVE ME A JOB

Final solution for updating from windows 8 to windows 8.1, if all else fails,

(please read through before starting, to be sure you have everything ready)

What you will need

Windows 8 installation disk(same as system OS)

System hardware Drivers(from hardware website)

Produkey or SetupRw software(google and download) to get your key

(if you need to flash your bios prior to this to get your system back, you will need a usb stick and the latest Bios update for your system from the website)

steps to take,1st get windows key from the system, (windows or chip) using either

produkey or SetupRw, - google and download, then run to get your key.

Boot into Bios, this will make factory reset and current OS obsolete,

press F2 during boot,

or (in windows) go to Settings > Change PC settings > General, scroll down to advanced startup and click Restart now, computer will restart with a screen saying choose options, click Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings, then click restart,

In Bios

change UEFI to Legacy,

change boot priority to boot CD/DVD drive 1st,

Enable F12 boot menu, (Important)

Insert Windows 8 disk(be sure it is the same version that was originally installed for use with your windows key), then save and exit bios,

your computer will restart but windows will not load, you need to boot from disk, either press any key when prompted during startup, or by pressing F12 and selecting to boot from CD/DVD drive,

follow instructions for clean install, when the list of partitions are shown you will need to delete them all and create a new partition for windows, and if space permitted a 2nd for back-up to save files for future reset, then select the partition you want windows on and continue to follow instructions to get windows up and running,

Windows installed,

now install your system drivers, these can be downloaded from your hardware web site(Acer etc.)

connect to the internet, and then register your windows(settings, PC info)

Click- Activate with a new product key, then enter the product key you recorded at the beginning, click next/activate, windows should activate,

Getting 8.1 update

use windows update to update windows(will take a few hours and a few restarts),

when no more important updates are available you can then use the store to update to 8.1, SUCCESS.

now you can use 3rd party software to create an image of your OS partition and save it on the 2nd partition you created, so you can quickly reset computer to this point at any time without all the hassle, I use Acronis(true image)

and your system is now ready for whatever else you want on it,

Hope this solves the issue for others, (which for my system must have been something that was in the factory reset) so I must blame Acer)
