Visiting someone and my laptop can't connect to the 2.4G or 5G WiFi network directly from the router.
But it can connect to the WiFi extender - which is a problem because it is unreliable.
My phone connects to all networks fine.
Before visiting, my laptop connected fine to all networks.

Hi, Turzilla
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
I understand that your laptop is unable to connect to certain WiFi networks (both 2.4G and 5G bands), but can connect to a WiFi extender, and your cell phone has no issues. This can be caused by a variety of reasons including device limitations, network settings, etc. You can try the following troubleshooting steps:
I.Basic Check
I.Check the network name (SSID) and password:
- Make sure you enter the correct network name and password.
- Check if there are multiple networks with similar names that can be connected to ensure that the correct one is selected.
Restart the router and computer:
- Shut down and reboot your router, which can solve many temporary problems.
- Reboot the computer and make sure the network adapter is reinitialized.
II. Update and check network drivers
Update drivers:
- Open Device Manager (press Win + X to select “Device Manager”).
- Under “Network Adapters”, locate and right-click on your wireless network adapter and select “Update Driver”.
- Select “Automatically search for updated drivers”.
Roll back the driver (if the problem persists after the driver is updated):
- In Device Manager, right-click on the wireless network adapter and select “Properties”.
- Go to the “Drivers” tab and click “Rollback Driver”.
- If you are unable to update and rollback the driver through Device Manager, then it is recommended that you visit your laptop manufacturer's website to update the driver of your network card.
III. Network Configuration and Forgotten Networks
Forget and reconnect to the network:
- Open “Settings” -> “Network and Internet” -> “WiFi” -> “Manage Known Networks”. Manage known networks”.
- Find the network in question and click “Forget”.
- Reconnect to the network and enter the correct password.
Reset network settings:
- Open “Settings” -> “Network and Internet” -> slide to the bottom of the page and click “Reset Network”.
- After resetting the network, restart your computer and reconnect to WiFi.
IV. Check WiFi adapter configuration
Adjust the advanced adapter settings:
- In Device Manager, right-click the wireless network adapter and select “Properties”.
- Go to “Advanced” tab, check the settings such as “Wireless Mode” and “Priority Band” to make sure it is compatible with all networks.
- You can try to set “Wireless Mode” to compatible mode (e.g. 802.11a/b/g/n).
V. DNS Cache and IP Configuration
Refresh DNS and reset IP configuration:
- Press Win + X and select “Windows PowerShell (Administrator)”.
- Enter the following command and press Enter:
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns
VI. Router Settings Checking
Check MAC address filtering:
- Log in to the router management interface and check if MAC address filtering is enabled. If it is enabled, whitelist the MAC address of your laptop.
Adjust the router's wireless settings:
- Try to change the wireless channel of the router, sometimes channel interference may cause connection problems.
- Make sure the router's firmware is updated to the latest version.
VI. Test different network environments.
Connect to another WiFi network:
- Go to another location and connect to a different WiFi and check if it connects properly.
- This will determine if the problem is caused by a specific environment.
If the problem persists, consider contacting the laptop manufacturer or the corresponding network provider for further assistance.
Best Regards
