Laptop cannot wake up from sleep if the lid was closed

Since the Windows 10 May 2019 update, the laptop cannot wake up when the lid is opened. The power button lights up and fans start up but the screen stays black and the computer doesn't respond to any button (not even the power button which would normally put it to sleep), or to closing the lid again.

The problem only occurs if the sleep was triggered by closing the lid. If I press the power button or choose the sleep option from the Start menu, it works properly, even if the lid was closed after it went to sleep.

It's an Asus GL502VM. I used to have similar issues occasionally when it wouldn't wake up from hibernation properly, the screen stayed black. Pressing the power button or closing the lid to send it to sleep and waking up again solved the problem. Now it doesn't react to anything and it happens every time I close the lid.

Hi Tolsco. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.

I've seen a few of these cases since the new Version Update but yours adds important information that you do get fans and lights but no display. This rules out that the ability of screen open to wake up the PC (only available on certain brands and models) has been impacted. The problem seems to be with the display.

Update the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

if this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

If this was caused by a Version Update then for 10 days you can roll it back in Settings>Update & Security>Recovery and then hide it until it matures using the Hide Updates Tool which is explained more here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta....

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Gerg!

I checked that my display driver is the latest. Also tried reinstalling it, that didn't help. BIOS was also updated to the latest version a few weeks ago. Other drivers seem up-to-date as well. I don't want to roll back the Windows Update.

Fortunately, I can still use the sleep function if I use the power button, so it's not a critical issue. I also changed the behavior to Hibernate when the lid is closed. That works well, only the Sleep is faulty. I hope a Windows or Nvidia update will resolve the problem in the future.

Hi again -

The issue of black screen after waking from sleep for Asus similar models is also discussed here:
https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=1...
https://rog.asus.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-...

On the driver downloads page for your model there is a chat link you could ask them about the issue and if a driver needs to be updated or reinstalled to refresh the function which wakes from sleep when lid is opened: https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-GL502VM/Hel...

Thanks for linking those discussions. Those look like the older issue I mentioned, which can be solved by activating sleep then wake up again. That doesn't help here, as it can't even go back to sleep.

I tried a few of the tips mentioned in the discussions but none of them worked. Except 1 time, when I first tried to remove the Logitech mouse adapter before sending the PC to sleep. It managed to wake up, but then I repeated the process half a dozen times, and all failed, whether the adapter was plugged in or not.

I don't plan to spend more effort on solving this. I will get used to push the power button for sleep mode before closing the lid, I can live with that. Maybe if others experience the same issue, it will be worth it to continue the investigation.
