Keyboard freezes every startup, Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga w/Windows 10

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga, 4 years old. Great little device but maddening problem.

It is a 2-in-1 and I 've disabled "tablet mode" etc.

I use it for ONE THING ONLY. To hook up to TV and watch videos. I boot up, and all is well. But 90% of the time when I open a video, as soon as I do, the cursor and keyboard freeze. I can still manipulate via the touchscreen.

Other times it's moving the mouse for the first time that freezes it. I have to shut down, restart then all is well. It's like it's PROGRAMMED to do this ONE every OTHER log in session, but no more than once. I've even watched a video, shut that one down, then opened a 2d and that's when it freezes. So no rhyme or reason. Freezes basically when it's given ANY input whatsoever, with the first 5 input events (mousepad touch, screen move, file opening, etc.) then once rebooted, it generally won't do it again during the NEW reboot.

RESTARTING DOES NOT SOLVE. IT STAYS FROZEN. I literally have to hold the power button until everything goes dead, then restart.

Hi,

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are facing an issue with your laptop freezing after startup. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below.

1.    What is the complete model number of your Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga?

2.    Which build of Windows 10 is running on your system? To check that, click on Start, type winver and press Enter.

3.    Was there any major change or an update on your system, prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?

4.    Is the issue persistent only when the laptop is connected to the TV?

Meanwhile I would suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it is helpful to you.

Method 1: Update the display adapters.

This issue could be caused due to outdated display adapters. I would suggest you to update the display adapters in your laptop and check if the issue still persists. To do that, you can follow the steps in the article to Update drivers in Windows 10.

If the issue still persists, please follow ‘Method 2’.

Method 2: Start your system in Safe Mode.

Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. If a problem doesn't happen in safe mode, this means that default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue. You can refer the article to Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10, follow the section ‘From Settings’ and check if the issue still persists in safe mode. If not, please proceed to Method 2.

Note: To exit the safe mode, follow the 'Note' section within the same article provided above.

Method 3: Checking through clean boot.

Disclaimer - A ‘clean boot’ starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with the normal functioning of your system. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality while in a clean boot environment, however that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after you have finished your troubleshooting.

You can check this article on How to perform a clean boot in Windows to start your system in clean boot and then please follow the section ‘How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot’ to proceed with the troubleshooting.

Note: To start your system in normal mode, you can refer the section 'Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting'.

If the issue still persists, please reply to us with the results of the troubleshooting steps suggested above. We will look into this for you and we will be glad to assist you with this.

Regards,
