Keyboard backlight on Zenbook 16x Pro stopped working after the Windows 11 24H2 update. Please help

Hi everyone, the keyboard backlight on my lovely Zenbook 16x Pro suddenly stopped working after the Windows 11 24H2 update.

I reinstalled the ASUS System Control Interface driver and myASUS app. It works until I restart the computer...

After the restart, the keyboard backlight does not work again and I have to repeat the process of reinstalling the driver and myASUS app.

What should I do?

Hello Oles Horalevych,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

It seems like you're facing an issue where the keyboard backlight on your ASUS Zenbook 16x Pro stops working after each restart following the Windows 11 24H2 update. We understand that you've tried reinstalling the ASUS System Control Interface driver and myASUS app, but the problem recurs after rebooting. Here are some more steps you can take to fix the issue:

1. Run Windows Troubleshooter for Hardware and Devices

Windows 11 has a built-in troubleshooter that can detect and fix issues with hardware.

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

  • Click Run next to Hardware and Devices and follow the on-screen instructions to check for any issues.

2. Disable Windows Fast Boot (if applicable)

Fast boot is a feature in Windows that can sometimes prevent hardware settings (like the keyboard backlight) from initializing correctly after a reboot.

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.

  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).

  • Save the changes and restart your computer.

3. Perform a Clean Boot

Perform a clean boot to see if a background program is causing the issue. This will start Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.

  • Go to the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.

  • Go to the Startup tab and open Task Manager.

  • Disable all startup items.

  • Restart the computer. If the keyboard backlight works after the clean boot, you'll need to enable services one by one to identify the culprit.

Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.
These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get back on track.

4. Check ASUS BIOS Settings

The keyboard backlight might be controlled at the BIOS level as well, so it's worth checking:

  • Reboot your computer and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2 or Esc during startup).

  • Look for any settings related to the keyboard backlight and ensure that it is enabled.

  • Save any changes and exit BIOS.

Disclaimer:  If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

5. Reinstall the Windows 11 24H2 Update

If the problem started specifically after the Windows 11 24H2 update, there might be a bug with the update itself.

  • You can try uninstalling the 24H2 update temporarily:

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History.

    • Select Uninstall updates and remove the Windows 11 24H2 update.

  • After doing this, check if the keyboard backlight starts working. You can also try reinstalling the update later if the issue is fixed.

6. Contact ASUS Support

If none of the above solutions work, there could be a deeper software or hardware issue at play. Contact ASUS support for further assistance, especially if your laptop is still under warranty. ASUS support page
