Keyboard and touch pad not working after windows updates

So I bought a new laptop a week ago or so (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAATJ6Y48865).  When I got it the keyboard and touch pad did not work.  I ended up nuking the system and reinstalling to get them to work.  Windows installed updates yesterday and when I took the laptop in to work with me last night the keyboard and mouse did not work.  I made it back to the hotel today and decided to see what was going on.  I am showing error 10 on the touch pad

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Device Timeout}
The specified I/O operation on %hs was not completed before the time-out period expired.

and because of this the keyboard isn't even detected.  At least my USB keyboard and mouse still work, but really this is killing me here.  I am going to try and rollback windows, but really can't windows do something like look at device manager see if there are any problems before an update save a list of those then after the update check the list and if they broke something they just automatically roll back to before the updates?

Hi,

The error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" is caused by the hardware key does not contain a “FailReasonString” value. Typically, the device's hardware key contains a "FailReasonString" value, and the value string is displays an error message defined by the hardware manufacturer. To resolve this error, we suggest updating the driver of your touchpad and keyboard.

For more information about error codes in Device Manager in Windows, please check this article.

Please post back with the result for further assistance.

The drivers are the most recent from the manufacturer... I even uninstalled and reinstalled them hoping something would change.

But please understand I went through this whole thing when I first got the laptop because the keyboard and mouse didn't work because of a windows update.  So I ended up nuking the OS and reinstalling from scratch (bootable USB with win 10 and the laptop's drivers on it).  Everything worked fine for a few days keyboard and touch pad and now I am back to where I was due to windows updates.  I tried doing a system restore back to the 11th, but windows will not roll back for some reason(no AV installed yet unless your own defender... oh wait I turned that **** off already...).  Without knowing what update broke my drivers I can't be sure of which one to remove or if I can even remove it.  What I find odd is that it breaks both the touch pad and the keyboard.  If I disable the touch pad in device manager and reboot the keyboard will give me an error 10, but will not do so before I disable the touch pad.

If only select all and copy worked on that screen.....

[Edit]

I would like to add I did manage to do a restore back to the 11th, but the touchpad and keyboard still do not function.... maybe restore does not undo updates.  I don't know for sure I guess one option is to go through and nuke every update off the system just to see if it will help anything.  If it does just reinstall one by one to figure out which one is the problem.  Is microsoft still doing that snake in the grass tactic of turning auto updates back on if I do a manual check for updates after I have turned the automatic updates off?

Thank you for the information you've provided.

"maybe restore does not undo updates." - System Restore will also remove all Windows updates.

"Is Microsoft still doing that snake in the grass tactic of turning auto updates back on if I do a manual check for updates after I have turned the automatic updates off?" - Windows automatically turn on Windows Updates. However, you may check the following articles to temporarily prevent a Windows Update and driver update from reinstalling:

  1. How to temporarily prevent a Windows Update from reinstalling in Windows 10
  2. How to temporarily prevent a driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10

We suggest performing again a System Restore, then see if the latest updates installed will be removed.

We would appreciate an update how it went.

With windows running, insert recovery boot drive on USB

Shut down system

Start System, hit F12 on Boot

Select "Boot from USB"

Start

Allow time to completely boot.

Disconnect USB using windows tool

Wait for updates to occur and restart

Should be Good to Go.

So I disabled the update service and uninstalled all the updates... Still no touchpad or keyboard on the laptop itself.  My USB keyboard and mouse work.  I'll give your deal a shot here in a minute Kevin if there are no other replies I will add an edit.

[EDIT]

So I booted from my USB - it isn't a recovery USB, but anyways I booted and noticed the keyboard and touchpad worked inside of that shell.  I went to the dos prompt did a SFC /scannow for fun of course no violations detected (I had already assumed this would be true, but hey whatever) I rebooted and now the keyboard and touchpad are working - I did not install any updates yet.... But I do have one last question for you Riel... Is there a way to manage the updates one by one like we did on XP or 7?  I remember windows 7 having issues if you let it auto update because a couple updates would conflict with each other.  If I could maybe install the updates one by one we could find the root cause of this issue.

Hi,

We're following your post and we noticed that it's been idle for more than 48 hours. We'd like to know if the issue still persists and an assistance is still needed.

Regarding the updates, they are automatically downloaded once available, to ensure your device is up to date with Windows latest program and security features. Managing the updates one by one is no longer available with Windows. Should you encounter issues with a particular update, you have an option to remove an installed update. We don’t recommend that you remove any installed updates. However, if you must remove an update, you can do so from the update history.

For more information, see Windows Update: FAQ.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Hi Clive,

In your case, downloading the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website would be the best thing to do. Note that regardless how many times you uninstall and reinstall the touchpad driver, it won't work unless it's the latest version of the touchpad driver.

Regards.
