KB5003173 Fails to Install With Error Code 0x80070002

Windows update detects and downloads the update normally, install appears to proceed normally as well and computer reboots but Windows Update history shows this update as failed with error code 0x80070002. I've searched online and I see some people have failed installs of this update if they have removed Edge browser but I updated to the Chromium version and did NOT attempt removal of either version.

Microsoft Edge Version 90.0.818.56 (Official build) (64-bit). Windows 10 Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.928)

I have also tried downloading the KB5003173 offline installer but it fails with the same error as well.

Google search turned up this link and I also tried the suggested steps there https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/391260/windows-10-2021-05-kb5003173-fails-if-edge-uninsta.html including sfc /scannow and renaming SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution folder.  Still the same error.

I've also run the troubleshooter but it failed to correct the problem.

I've reconstructed the windows update logs and here's the bit showing the error code:

There may be some other related entries, I'll keep looking and post again if I find more.

There is no indication if this error is related to the Edge installation/uninstallation as was the case with the other error code.  Is there any other logs or things I can check to confirm if Edge is causing the issue before I attempt removal an re-installation of the old version?  This computer is only a year old and Windows runs perfectly fine otherwise.  It's also the computer my kid uses for online schooling so it needs to be operational and I really would prefer not to use system restore or re-install the operating system.  If it's not fixable I'll just hide the update for now and once summer vacation hits I'll have time to blow everything away and start from scratch.

Good Day RaquelWey,

My name is Carlo, I am an independent advisor and a member of the community just like you.
I also use a Windows 10 computer. Let's work together to to sort this out.

Here are the steps you can try.

-Press Windows key + X
-Go to Settings
-Click Update and Security
-Click Troubleshooter then Additional troubleshooter.
-Look for Windows Update and run the troubleshooter.

Once done , go to this link and download the tool to reset the Windows Update Components.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/24742-reset...

After following those steps, restart your computer and try to install updates.

If the issue persists, you can perform Repair Upgrade , this will reinstall Windows without affecting your files and applications, it will repair and replace damaged system files. This will also update your computer to the latest version of Windows.

Step 1: Download the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

Click "Download Tool Now"

Step 2: Run MediaCreationTool.exe.
Step 3: Select "Upgrade this computer now".
Step 4: Select "Keep personal files and applications".
Step 5: Let it install

Hope the above information helps. Please let me know how it goes.
Have a nice day ahead and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Carlo T.

Not all updates succeed as Microsoft like other software firms use DevOps framework with continuous integration concept, updates replacing other updates with previous things that are no longer useful for your machine allowing reduced internet bandwidth. The update in question can be seen here : May 11, 2021—KB5003173 (OS Builds 19041.985 and 19042.985) (microsoft.com).

Thanks Carlo TJ, I did already try the troubleshooter and resetting Windows Update components and neither helped.  I completely agree that doing a repair upgrade would be the correct next step if no other alternatives were possible, and I would proceed with that if the computer was not working well otherwise.  I guess I was hoping that someone would chime in with a more specific and/or slightly more technical response that would aid me to investigate further myself and in doing so maybe I can help someone else who may also be having this issue. I understand though, that about a million things can go wrong with Windows Update and it's not possible for the support community to get to the bottom of every issue, especially if it's not widely reported.

As a side note, I also checked on the manufacturer website for driver and bios updates.  Bios is already up to date, I did install updates for the bluetooth, wireless adapter and the latest nVidia drivers. The update still fails. Windows Update app gets to 100%, then the "Restart Now" button shows up.  I press the button, it restarts and the "Installing" progress only gets to 7%, then it restarts again and briefly displays an "Updates could not be installed" message.  When Windows Update initially detected this update, it also detected some other updates and those installed without issue.  This is the only one that is failing.

I will wait and see if anyone else has this particular error on this particular update.  If not, then I will re-install Windows.

I am seeing the same thing when I try to run the update (both via Windows Update and downloading the update from Microsoft and installing it directly). I also tried to update to 21H1 with the identical results. All other available updates have installed successfully. (My PC OS is Windows 10/64 Pro 20H2
