iTunes purchased HD movies won't play - HDCP error

I've purchased HD movies on iTunes but they won't play on my Windows PC.  I'm being given an error about HDCP support.

The "Learn More" button takes me to this link: iTunes for Windows: Unable to view or play HD video content that requires HDCP

My computer has a built-in display.  It's an "all-in-one" PC so the movie should play.  The screen resolution is 1920x1080.  It's a fairly new PC.  I bought it last year.   Can I check somewhere if my PC is HDCP compatible?

How do I fix this?  Is this an iTunes bug?

You will need to download the latest version of ITUNES.   You have an old version that has recently be updated to fix this problem.  If that doesn't fix it you might try these tips from others who have had the problem:

I'm using the latest iTunes.  I downloaded it today.  That link doesn't help.  It's talking about a Mac.  I'm using a PC.

I'm starting to think it is the latest AMD Radeon HD Drivers for my video card because I was able to play movies, including Furious 7 a week or so ago and now I cannot play ANY HD movies from my iTunes account.  I too have downloaded the latest iTunes, which is the same version that was already installed.  Please Help.

My PC has a AMD Radeon 8690A and the driver is the latest one as far as I can see in Device Manager.  Clicking on "Update Driver..." results in Windows saying I already have the latest driver.  It's iTunes that's so picky about HDCP.

There's still no solution to this!

Hi,

I got the same error after updating to windows 10. Unfortunately, the only thing that works is to re-download the movies. Or at least that was the solution for me.

Regards

Andrew

I am now experiencing this exact same problem.  The ONLY thing that has changed in my setup is some recent Windows updates.  Re-downloading the movies makes absolutely no difference.  The only solution that I had was to do a system restore to the point just before the updates and then things started working just fine again.  Windows 10 has made managing updates so much more difficult that I can't even figure out how to troubleshoot.  Normally I would turn off automatic updates and then install the updates one by one until I figure out which one causes the problem.  But I can't figure out how to do that anymore in windows 10.  This is INCREDIBLY frustrating!

What's your iTunes version after doing a system restore?  Are you on an older iTunes now?

Version of iTunes both before and after the system restore is 12.3.1.  I updated to that version and had no issues, then windows updates happened and the problem started.  After I restored before the windows update problems went away.  Then today windows update happened again and the problem is back

Also tried re-downloading a movie and that didn't work as well.  Oddly enough I can still stream the movies to a TV via AppleTV but they simply will not play on my laptop.

I think the root cause of this problem is with iTunes, not with Windows 10 updates, since your Apple TV is working. Apple has created a tough content protection feature in iTunes.  I asked this question on the Apple forums (https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_windows) but no one answered.  I did find some posts about "possible workarounds" there.  Check those out.
