OK got it. The issue is that Windows 10 tries using a Microsoft device driver for the iPhone iPad etc.
So the solution is to tell Device Manager that the driver is an Apple driver.
How?
Go to Control Panel, type in Device Manager (in the search box on top RHS), as you are typing Device Manager appears as an option on the left.
Open Device Manager, and select the iPhone (either in Portable devices or Other devices).
Double Click (or Right-Click) on the iPhone and open Properties
Select the tab Driver, then Update Driver
It will ask “How do you want to search for driver software?”
Select the option “Browse my computer for driver software”
And then in the search location type:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
(Depending on whether or not you have been using the 64 bit version of iTunes you may need instead to use: C:\Program Files x86\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
What this is doing is telling Device Manager where to find your “old” drivers (which worked prior to Windows 10).
Just used this for replacement iPhone and my iPad Air, both of which were unable to Sync before.

My iPhone is stuck in recovery mode & iTunes can't SEE it. I've tried this method & "The best driver software for your device is already installed"
"Windows has determined that the driver software is up to date" pops up. What else can I do to get my phone to sync with iTunes and get it out of recovery mode?

I had the same problems as you. I know it was written one year ago so you might not need this anymore, but in case anyone else does...
To get your iPhone out of recovery mode, you need to press on the Power button and the Home button at the same time for as long as it would take to have an apple showing up on the screen. It can take a few seconds but don't lose patience, it does end up working.
As for the rest, I had followed all the steps written by Martin Trainer, but I didn't have any "Drivers" file in Mobile Device Support, and when I started the process again but clicked on "Search automatically for update driver software", I got the same message as you did, so I guess that's what you had done.
But I found the solution:
once in the Properties of iPhone in the Device Manager, I went to the Hardware tab,
at the bottom of the tab, I selected Properties,
I got into a new window, and in the opened tab "General", at the bottom, I selected "Change settings"
Another window opened, there I found the tab "Driver" that was dealt with in the above instructions,
I selected "Update driver" as told,
I found myself in front of the question "How do you want to search for driver software?",
I selected the option "Browse my computer for driver software", and that's where it changes:
I didn't type the location because I had found that I didn't have any "Drivers" file where there was supposed to be one, so instead,
I selected "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer",
and in the list that showed up, I picked the "MTP USB Device".
It installed the thing, and the Apple iPhone icon finally appeared on my desktop search.
If my explanation wasn't clear enough, I apologize, I am French, my computer is also in French so it was quite hard to translate. In any case, I learned what to do from this video - though some stuffs has changed since it was done on windows 7, it is still clear and useful enough:

I agree I could not believe that it would take me 8 hrs and I am computer literate (I thought!! ) to find this. What is up with Microsoft that they make it this hard for so many loyal users

Thanks, BUT the point is that the iPhone and IPad are NOT recognized in Device Manager (Portable Devices or other Devices) and not in ITunes.
This was stated in the header to this thread. With respect, you must not have had the same problem at all
If I could see it in either I would not have the problem. I can see hard drives and Samsung Android but NOT apple
I have tried disabling, resetting, drivers etc and reloading ITunes. More than once.
I do have one possibility
in the USB Controllers I have
"AMD USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)"
what do you guys who have? (if you have no problem)
