InfoTip for a file in a network drive

Can anybody explain me why after customization of the InfoTip of a file in the Registry (i.e. jpg image) I have a correct result as far as the file is local in my PC (including OneDrive) but is not applied for a file in my network drive. It is just as if it shows the default configuration of the InfoTip.

Sorry but it is not possible to make a screen capture.

For example in my PC I configured the InfoTip  to show:

-Type of file

-Date taken for the Photo

-Dimensions of the Photo

-Size of the file

But in my network drive I only have what follows, despite my efforts to modify it:

-Type of File

-Size of file

-Date when modified

Thanks,

YB

Hi YANNB_74

I am an independent advisor here to help

To my knowledge it is only possible to make this modification for files that are stored on the local drive. It would not apply to networked folders.

I do wonder though if you modified the InfoTip on the host PC, if it would 'transmit' the additional information for InfoTip to the PC from which you are accessing the networked folders

Hi Techguy,

Thanks for you help.

It seems to me that you are the same who answered my question on the french forum. Is it true ??

However my question still remains. If the InfoTip appears on the screen that means that it is defined somewhere. I might not be able to modify it for each extension (jpg, mp4 etc ...) but at least the default values must be stored somewhere and likely modifiable .

To clarify your question, I modified the InfoTip on my PC and I accessed the network drive (or NAS)  from my PC and read in the Explorer window of my PC. Since it works ok with the OneDrive on my PC and from an external drive on USB, I do not understand why it should not work for a file on a networked drive. I can add that all details of the image from the networked drive are properly read and displayed. Then transmission of info works.

Why is the display of the InfoTip of such files not the same ?? Where can I change the default values ?

I give it a try with a reboot and let you know if by any chance it gives a change.

Hi Guy,

Nice to meet you again. Apparently no problems to continue in English.

No I did not try to reboot yet because I wanted to be sure if I was changing the right InfoTip. Hence my question on the forum to locate the place where the data, for the Infotip in case of a file from the network drive, is located.

In fact I made the changes in the InfoTip for the jpg files months ago and you can be sure that a lot of reboots happened since. However it is only few days ago that I discovered the discrepancy between the two drives. It is clear that the modifications that I made are not valid for the network file.

I worked on it for hours and gave up.

At the end I assumed that the following key was the one reflecting the InfoTip data that I had on the screen

Then I modified the key (Infotip) and the likes like :Ordinateur\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*  with no success. And in fact the content of the InfoTip varies a little with the files on the network.

I thought of rebooting but I didn't and said to myself, go to the experts now after all that time spent on searching the internet and making trials in the registry.

Hope you can help or report this issue since it is bugging me and is not logical in Windows.

Hi again

Continuing and either language is fine by me.

though Microsoft has asked that we keep to the native language of the form so for communicating here and Now English it is.

As I stated previously I don't believe that we are able to edit the information on a network drive because it is dependent on what information is being sent from the PC on which the files or folders are actually stored.

If you have not already you might try editing the info tip on the host computer and see if it will relay that information through so that you see it when you access it as a network drive from a different computer.

In the meantime as far as requesting better control over this functionality or additional features you can do that at any time by pressing the Windows key + f on your keyboard. any feedback or suggestions that you submit in that matter go directly to the windows development team

Guy,

No bother,

Last comment before we close out without results.

I keep telling you that I work on my PC on an EXPLORER window which shows my drives including my network drives. I'm not tweaking a network drive as you seem to imagine.

I would expect that Explorer is giving the same information for all jpg file for example in same window and for whatever drive (ok for OneDrive, ok for a USB drive but not ok for a NAS !!!).

It is true for preview details etc... but not the infotip. Why ??? and where is the data for it ?

I understand your point. I think perhaps I have not properly explained my thoughts.

Files that are stored on the PC or on an external drive connected to the PC are directly accessed by windows in their entity (every little details so to speak is available)

But when you are looking at files or folders that are on a network drive in file explorer, The PC that you are accessing it from depends on the information being transmitted from the host computer where the files are actually located.

Sorry man, but I have difficulties to follow you. What you call my host computer is my NAS.

I repeat, when I read a file stored on the NAS I can get all the details of the jpg file (as in the Properties Tab). So the information being transmitted is complete contrarily to what you can say.

So please answer my basic question, where is the data stored in the PC to be shown in the InfoTip or PreviewDetails, or TileInfo etc ... in case of a file accessed on a network drive. See attach't

If you can't please pass the issue to another expert.

Hi TechGuy,

You've silent so far meaning that you are stuck to answer me or maybe looking for a solution.

In the mean time I did my homework and, since you were prompt to help me, I'm going to help you (more than you did), but that could increase your knowledge about InfoTip on the Network in case of and not claim that it is not possible. That was barely credible.

For you information on the Network it is question of QuickTip and not InfoTip and now the problem is solved.

I attach an example of what I did. Sorry but not possible to have screen capture with these Tips.

Modif InfoTip pour les jpg files en local
Ordinateur\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.jpg
prop:
System.ItemType;
System.Photo.DateTaken;
System.Keywords;
*System.Photo.PeopleNames;
System.Rating;
*System.Image.Dimensions;
*System.Size;
System.Title

Modif QuickTip pour les fichiers sur Network y.c. les jpg bien sûr
Ordinateur\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*
prop:
System.ItemTypeText;
System.Keywords;
System.Size;
System.Photo.DateTaken;
*System.Image.Dimensions;
System.DateModified;
System.DateCreated

Hope you'll appreciate,

YB
