Incorrect Bitlocker password - but it isn't!

Hi,

When I type in my bitlocker password it says that I have entered it incorrectly. But I haven't. I absolutely have not. I type carefully and I even do the insert thing so I can see what I type. It is absolutely 100% correct. But it says it isn't so I have to use my recovery key to get in. Why does this happen? It doesn't always happen - maybe a couple of times a week.

Any ideas why this happens and how to stop it?

Thanks

Do you have another Keyboard that you can test with?

What happens if you use one of the On Screen Keyboards to enter your BitLocker code?

Can you change the BitLocker code and create and use another code?

What is the health of the hard drive like?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors.  Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking/ Check.  It will immediately tell you if there are problems with your drive.  If it says there are errors then run the scan by ticking both boxes and let chkdsk fix them.

Hi,

BitLocker is on my laptop and is used just after the loading screen - essentially cannot even get to Windows without going through BitLocker. I have used both the numbers on the laptop keyboard, as well as the F numbers. I also use Hebrew on my laptop (same keyboard - just ALT+SHIFT), so if BitLocker doesn't work I alt+shift again to try it out. Also to test, when the problem happens and I have to use the recovery key, I ensure my laptop is turned on to US Eng keyboard layout when I next shut down, though it doesn't seem to stop the error.

As far as I'm aware I cannot use the On Screen Keyboard for that part, until I actually get onto Windows. Though I might be wrong.

Using Windows Error Checking, no errors were found (phew!) - thanks for that lil' lesson.

I haven't yet tried to change it - just trying to find out why it's doing this first. I have the recovery key, so I can always get through, but it is rather mystifying knowing that I'm using the correct password.

I'd be inclined to give the machine a bit of a run with BitLocker disabled and removed just to see if you have any underlying problems on the machine, or in Windows, that might be cause of the incorrect passing of the code via the Keyboard.

Hi Mike,

BitLocker is designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes.

For me using an external keyboard solved the issue, you can press the insert key to see actually what is being entered into the system. e.g. in my case 0 was replaced by \ and so on
