I'm getting Error Code: 80073701 when installing KB4462923 as part of the October 2018 update

Windows 7 x64 (AMD)

"Windows encountered an unknown error"

Any ideas on how to resolve this.

I'm getting the same thing. Error 80073701. Customer support was unable to help with this so far and command prompt won't allow me to change the folder names per MS support website online self help instructions. Kept saying "access denied".

I tried the "Windows Update" trouble shooter to no avail.

"Control Panel" -> "All Control Panel Items" -> "Troubleshooting" -> "Fix problems with Windows Update"

I did the following and I was able to resolve the issue.

1. Reboot
2. Run the "windows update" trouble shooter
3. Run disk cleanup and cleanup all system files (in particular update files)
4. Reboot
5. Run windows update install KB4462923
6. This update requires a reboot

Thanks for the suggestion. That worked. I had recently run the disk cleaner and was assuming it would not need it again for this. Apparently there are problematic updates often and the cleaner really helps to get rid of them.
