Icons disappeared after scaling change

After I changed scaling from 100% to 125%, all icons disappeared whether it be desktop, taskbar, or file explorer. This is not the first time I changed scaling to 125%. This has never happened before when I changed scaling. It seems applications downloaded from Windows Store and pre-installed apps are not affected. Their icons on taskbar remain normal and visible. Though stuff like recycle bin is affected. The shortcuts I created and apps I downloaded outside Windows Store, such as office (word, power point, excel), games, Visual Studio, etc., lost icons and appear only with their name in desktop and file explorer. Actually, no icon is visible in file explorer. They all get same icon on taskbar. I have tried numerous solutions on internet and none of them worked. How can I fix this?

You can try to rebuild the icon and thumbnail cache to see if that works:

Open CMD.exe as admin by clicking on Start then type in CMD.exe. Then copy and paste this command:

cd c:/%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Then open Task Manger and end the Windows Explorer task. Ctrl Tab back to command prompt and enter:

attrib –h iconcache_*.db del iconcache_*.db start explorer

This will rebuild the Icon cache and thumbnails in Windows 10. Then reboot and see if the icons come back.

Click Start > Settings > Storage > Free up space now
Wait while files are scanned
Check Thumbnails

Click Remove files

Restart then check if your thumbnails are restored for thumbnail files.

In the folder containing your thumbnail files, click the View tab
Click Large icons in the Layout tab

Also try using your scroll wheel to increase the size. Hold down the control key then use the scroll wheel.

You can just run the following command to clear the icon cache:

Press Windows key + R
Type: ie4uinit.exe -show
Hit Enter

or

Open command console with admin privileges
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
start explorer.exe via Task Manager

Rebuild the icon cache.

Press Windows key + X
Click Task Manager
Click the Processes tab
Select Windows Explorer

Click End task

Open Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time : (Hit enter after each)

DEL /F /S /Q /A %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db

Exit then restart.

Could you upload screenshots to visually guide me through? I tried my best to follow the procedures but I could not do them correctly just looking at words.

Lets try something else...

Open Start > Settings > System > Display
Make sure recommended settings are selected for Scale and Layout and Screen resolution.

Press Windows key + X
Click Device Manager
Expand Display adapters
Right click the current display adapter
Click Properties
Click Driver tab
Click Rollback driver if the option is available

If not
Right click the current display adapter

Exit Device Manager
Restart

Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.
