I think I got the defender pop up scam and gave the person remote access to help me run diagnostics because I believed they were from Microsoft.

I was scammed by someone posing as a windows defender support specialist. They had remote access to my computer to run diagnostics and tell me what to do. They had me log in to my accounts to verify if any activity was suspicious and told me they would issue a hacking report to me within a few business days. I was in school at the time and stressed about making sure my computer was good. I never received a report. What do I do now?

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

1
If you logged into accounts while they had access to your PC, you should immediately change the passwords on all your accounts to a new long and strong password, and on your Microsoft account enable two step verification.

2
If they had access to your PC, that indicates you installed a utility like TeamViewer or some other remoting utility, you need to uninstall that completely from your PC.

The option is to open the Settings App, then go to Apps - Installed Apps.

Set the sorting by Date Installed On and uninstall any strange app that may be a remoting app you do not recognise that was installed on the date they had access to your PC.

3
Then run a full scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/defender-endp...

Then, run a full scan with the free version of Malwarebytes.

Do either of those report malware on your PC?

Thank you DaveM121.

I sent this message from my phone but I will want to follow your instructions at home later on my PC.

I stopped and spoke to a geeksquad rep and they suggested both steps 1 and 3. Thank you for the extra suggestion. I will follow up with an answer when I'm finished looking for the remote utility and running Malwarwbytes. It's alot. But thank you for the help. I feel much better.
