I recently got a notification saying: Time Zone Change, Due to a recent location change your time zone has been changed, even though I did not move

What is stranger about this, is that there is this guy I know who is from Kansas, and when I go to check the new location, it is set to HIS address, not mine. He has never told me his address other than the fact he lives in Kansas, and we are both freaked out. I have tried all of the things such as turning on and off automatic time zone change, I have tried to set my location manually, I have even gone into the command prompt to set my time zone to my real one. Despite all of this, my location always resets back to his within 5-10 minutes. I have searched online for the answer but can't find one. Am I being hacked? What can I do about this? I do not live in Kansas, he is in CST and I am in PST time. (I have never lived in anywhere outside of PST time and my computer has never been turned on outside of PST time or brought outside of PST)

Hello Garrett Bundesen,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

It seems you have been faced with some unexpected changes to your system location settings. This is a rare but possible problem indeed. To eliminate your concerns about account security, we recommend that you do the following:

Regarding your current issue, we recommend you visit account.microsoft.com/security (Microsoft Account Personal Security Center) to check the sign-in history of your account, confirm if there are any suspicious login attempts.

If unusual sign-in activity is found, it's highly recommended that you change your password and add two-factor authentication to your account, or use the Microsoft Authenticator app for passwordless sign-in. You can see the option to add "Two-Step Verification" on the same page above.

If you have found multiple sign-in attempts, it is recommended that you change your Microsoft account alias. Changing to another alias can prevent the potential hacker from signing into your current account.

Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com - Microsoft Support

Also, scan your computer with antivirus software to check for malware. This can improve the security of your system in the future.

Regarding the wrong time zone settings, if it's not related to a login in a different region, it could be caused by some technical fault in service. Generally, this kind of issue will need to verify your personally identifiable information (PII) to check your account profiles. We recommend you contact Microsoft Chat support team, to get further advice on your account profile. Here's how to contact Microsoft:

  1. Visit this site: Contact - Microsoft Support

  2. Type "contact" and click Get Help.

  3. Click contact support at the bottom of the page.

  4. Sign in with your Microsoft account.

  5. Under Products and Services, select Microsoft 365 and Office.

  6. In the category, select Billing and Account Profile questions, then click confirm.

  7. You can access the chat window by selecting “Chat with a Support Specialist in a Web Browser”.

Please Note: The Chat support team only works at certain times, so if the last window says the service is not available, try to come back later. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. That way, they can call you and help you.

Sincerely hope your issue can be resolved after contacting the correct department.

Best Regards,

William.Y | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
