I purchased a Windows 8.1 license and was offered a free upgrade to windows 10 pro and now my product key won't work

I recently upgraded my processor and motherboard so I decided to do a fresh install of windows and the product key that I pulled from the old system does not activate my copy of windows.

I apologize; unfortunately, Microsoft officially ends the free upgrade for Windows 10 and 11 on September 20, 2023. At present, it is not possible to use the Windows 7/8 license key to activate a Windows 10/11 PC. Kindly visit the link below for more details.

In addition to the other post the free upgrade was for the life of the device. When you change motherboard it is a new device and as such doesn't allow the use of Windows 7 or 8 licence keys to activate Windows 10.

You could assuming it has the necessary drivers for new hardware.
