I just upgraded to Windows 10 October 2018 Update version 1809 but it says my system is not activated.

My Windows 10 installation was activated before upgrading to Windows 10 October 2018, but after upgrading, my installation now says its not activated. There is also a watermark on the desktop.

This could be an anomaly. The first thing I would do is wait a few days to 1 week to see if this problem resolves itself automatically.

Click Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation

Click the Troubleshoot link

Wait while it diagnoses the problem. It will tell you whether you have the right edition installed or not.

If you see: Windows 10 Activation reports your license will soon expire.

This can happen for a number of reasons:

  • You copied a Windows 10 Pro off the Internet (usually a volume license - organization - key) and changed on a Windows 10 Home installation. Windows 10 Pro is not free. If this is what you did, you will need to reinstall the previous edition or version you were running. You inadvertently installed the wrong edition.
    • The copy of Windows 10 you download and upgrade from will correspond with the edition of Windows you have installed, if it does not, this is why you might be experiencing problems activating:
  • Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core will install Windows 10 Home
  • Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro will install Windows 10 Pro

To find out if you have the right edition installed:

Click Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation > Edition.

If the edition of Windows 10 installed does not correspond with the edition of Windows 7 or Windows 8 you were previously running, then you need to reinstall the right edition.

You can also using the valid key for your system to activate Windows 10.

How to Find Your Product Key After Upgrading to Windows 10

Windows 7 came preinstalled on my computer, how do I find the product key?

The product key is usually located on the COA sticker attached to the bottom of your laptop or in the battery compartment. In some rare cases it can also be found in the memory compartment. For tower systems, look at the top or the side of the system unit.

About a month ago, I installed Windows 10 Pro October 2018 (clean install). I am recently seeing a windows activation problem. I tried using the troubleshooter to fix it, but it claims that my windows license is for Home edition, while I am sure that it is a Pro.

In the first place, I had upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro, and then from Windows 8.1 Pro to windows 10 a few years ago and it got activated with no problems all these years (I reinstalled Windows 10 since then a few times). I was never given a Windows 10 Pro product key  (because it was activated after an upgrade from Windows 8.1).

A couple of years back, I had a major repair of my laptop (motherboard was changed) but Windows 10 Pro remained active since then (even after reinstalling it a few times), until this October 2018 update. Now I am reading in the forums that I had to associate my Windows 10 Pro license with my Microsoft account, which I did not. I even tried my original Windows 8 Pro product key, but it did not work on Windows 10 the activation wizard of course.
