I gave out my credit card information to someone I thought was from Microsoft

Oh my god I gave out my credit card information to someone I thought was from Microsoft. I figured that only the Microsoft people would know how many errors have been put throw on my PC so they must be real. They said it had a Trojan in it and was bad. I knew it was infected so I gave out my information to Teamviewer to put in this program to keep my computer clean and fix any problems that I get. What do I do now that someone has that number and it is not Microsoft. Is this a real program or a scam just to get my information. Is my credit card at risk. and how do they have the information on my reports to Microsoft.

*original title - now that they have my card number*

Answer
Answer

Scam.

  • Call your credit card company immediately.  Cancel it.  Let them know what is going on (you won;t likely be the first caller with that story.)
  • Change all your passwords to every account.
  • Depending on what they did to your computer/etc - it may be best to disconnect it from the internet/local network and restore it to factory defaults.

Next time know that Microsoft will not call *you* to fix an issue on your computer without you having initiated it in some manner and you would be expecting the call.  Also - they likely would use MICROSOFT products to get on your computer - not third party tools. *smile*

Oh - and it is unlikely they have any actual information on you/your errors.  Social engineering.
