I am unable to access the Local Drive Z. Please help.

I have noticed that a local drive z, is now showing in my File Explorer (this is only recent, and I have not done any downloads or installed any applications). I cannot open it to see the contents (it is saying that I do not have permission)

Please advise as I am concerned it is Malware.

Thank you

Hello,

Is the computer connected to any domain? Also, are you using the admin account to access your computer? From when is the issue persisting? Do receive any error code related to the issue?

We understand that you are unable to view the contents of the Z drive as it showing permission is needed in that case, please sign in using the admin account, and then follow the below steps.

1. Press Windows key + E key> This PC.

2. This PC> Right click Z: drive> Properties> Sharing> Advanced sharing> tick the Share this folder> Permissions> select the user name>select the full control, change and read as allow.> Ok > Restart your computer.

Please let us know if the issue is resolved or you need any further assistance.

Thank you.

Have a good day!

On my system, Drive Z identified as local drive in File Explorer) periodically appears and then disappears.  I cannot access the contents of this 96 MB drive!

Not to my satisfaction.  Unfortunately, their are two problems of which the Microsoft guy responded to only one (can't access the Z drive), but not the second problem (Why does it appear and disappear?).

Drive Z is not a malware it's a Microsoft hidden partition for booting the computer, for some reason it becomes visible at times. You can try rebooting your computer and see if it hides Drive Z again. If not, you can try the following steps below:

  1. Type CMD on start menu to open Command Prompt.
  2. Type Diskpart and hit Enter.
  3. Click Yes if you are prompted with UAC (User Account Control) dialog-box.
  4. Type List Volume and hit Enter.
  5. Select the drive that you want to hide, type Select Volume Z or Select Volume 8 (change 8 with the volume number of Drive Z)
  6. Type Remove Letter Z.

Let us know how it goes.
