How to set Windows 10 to boot to Start Screen instead of desktop?

Original title: Change Default Startup Screen

I would like Windows to start in the "tile" mode. That is, the one you get when pressing the "window" key.

Any one know how to do this?

Thanks,

NitramL

Hi Nitram,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. I will surely help you.

Windows 10 will boot to Start Screen only if it is in Tablet Mode. Tablet mode makes Windows easier and more intuitive to use with touch on devices like 2-in-1s, or when you don't want to use a keyboard and mouse. Refer the article for more information.

If you don't want to set to Tablet mode, then try this:

In settings set Start to open Full Screen

Copy the following lines to Notepad:

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
WshShell.SendKeys "{F3}"

Save as "startf3.vbs" or some other name.

Place the shortcut of the script in your Startup folder, which is located here:

C:\Users\<Your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

When you login, desktop will be shown till everything is loaded, and then the script runs sends/simulates F3 key which opens the Start page. Not a clean solution, but it works.

Thanks Ramesh. That works like charm and the delay is quite acceptable.

However when I use Word, for example, when it closes I return to the desktop, not the Start Menu.

Is there registry tweak that will make the Start Menu the only screen I see.

Thanks,

NitramL

Hi NitramL,

There is no tweak for that as far as I know. I guess Tablet mode is the only option for now.

Click the Action Center button in the notifications area and enable "Tablet mode".

Thanks Geethu,

I completely missed that setting - getting too old to fool with this stuff:-)

In seems that in tablet mode everything has to run full screen. I guess I'm looking for a hybrid where I'm always in Tablet Mode but can change the size of running programs.

Cheers,

NitramL

But it still beats DOS 1.0, which was my first PC OS:-)

The hybrid option existed in Windows 8/8.1, but that's removed in Windows 10.

I'll post back if I come across anything interesting.

This is not accurate. I've owned a new ThinkPad X1 Yoga (touchscreen) laptop for two weeks now. The start page (the one with the apps and programs in tile mode) was the default stating page while in desktop mode. When I changed the background picture earlier today, it switched to the desktop page. There does not seem to be a setting to switch back to using the start page as the default starting page. Going to tablet mode does this, but there is no background image. Just a dark grey screen. Its curious that the laptop was pre-programmed to show the tiled start page with a background image while in desktop mode, but now, after I changed the background picture, I lost that ability completely it seems.

Windows 10 Boot to Start Screen

When you start your Windows 10 PC, it will automatically boot to the desktop.

Steps to make Windows 10 boot to Start Screen:

Step 1: Go to replace the Start Menu with the Start Screen.

Step 2: Turn on the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog.

Right-tap any blank area on the taskbar, and choose Properties in the menu.

Step 3: Deselect related setting in the Navigation settings.

Click the Navigation tab, deselect the setting called When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start, and then choose OK.

Later, when you restart or log in your PC, the computer will boot to Start Screen instead of desktop.

I don't know which old version of Win10 you're using, but your instructions aren't valid for Win10 1607 (both steps 2 and 3 are useless now). There isn't even a Properties option any more when you right-click the taskbar - it's been replaced by a link to the Settings app.

What's the use of providing outdated info.?
