How to make LongPathsEnabled work on windows 11

Windows 10 allows longpaths to be enabled by a registry key. This same key does not appear to work for windows 11.

I also tried the group policy change to allow long path names.

ISE powershell in windows 10 allows me to create very deep folder structures. But, in Windows 11 I get PathTooLongException from powershell.

I have a long path aware application that worked great on my windows 10 box, but it fails on my Windows 11 box. It's as if Windows 11 is ignoring the enabling of long path names.

I've tried re-booting but that didn't help either. So, how do I enable Long path support on windows 11? (please don't send links to the regedit and group policy stuff that works on windows 10 and say it also works on windows 11 - please only respond if you verified this works on windows 11 version 10.0.22000)

Hi Andy. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

It shows here how to make Long Paths work on WIndows 11:

Those 3 links all say the same thing and I verified that I did those registry and group policy changes, but still no joy.

For jollies I tried the steps on my VM of windows 11 Enterprise (Hyper-V). That VM also has this same issue. My windows 10 boxes do not have this issue. My main PC running windows 11 won't work with long filenames either.

My standard test for long path support is in ISE powershell

If this last command does not produce a PathTooLongException then it's all good. Perhaps you could make a Windows 11 version 10.0.22000 VM and reproduce this issue?

I have an EXE that is long path aware that works great on my windows 10 boxes, but fails the deep path tests on the windows 11 boxes. So, I do not think this is a manifest issue. I think Windows 11 has some sort of issue.

If you want to report this you may be able to help Microsoft improve this product/experience by using the Feedback Hub in Start Menu, especially if you are comfortable with sharing relevant data and screen recordings. Microsoft developers DO read feedback from customers that comes in via the Feedback Hub, so that is a great way to share your thoughts on how to better serve you as a customer.
There is also a Windows 11 Insider forums here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-... where more enthusiasts gather and developers are known to monitor, so you might be able to get more traction with your question there.
Additionally, for Enterprise questions I would ask at our sister forums for IT Professionals, Q&A forums here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/answers/index.... as Microsoft Community is strictly an end-consumer forum that does not answer Enterprise questions.
There are also equally good (and sometimes busier) IT Pro forums here:
https://www.techrepublic.com/forums/
https://www.spiceworks.com/

I hope it helps.
