How to fix broken Windows Update

I want to update windows

However when I open the windows update on my computer it always says "Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later."

Previously there was a windows update stopper (driver) on my computer however I have deleted it and restarted the windows update driver but it did not do anything.

When running the windows update trouble shooter it cannot identify the problem.

I have tried using external programs that can update windows but they did not work.

I have tried updating windows many ways but they all try to use the windows update driver on my device which does not work.

Is there a way that I can either update windows without this driver or fix the windows update driver?

Hi Harry,

I'm Paul and I'm here to help you with your concern.

Please try the following.

1. Run Troubleshooter
Open Settings => System => Troubleshoot => Other troubleshooters => Windows update => Run.

2. Use Command Prompt commands.
=> Open Command prompt as Administrator.
=> Type/copy the commands below , enter 1 by 1.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

=> Close the Command Prompt and restart your computer then try to update again.

3. Use System File Checker to check and fix corrupted system files which may be the cause of the issue. Please refer to the link.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402652...

After that try to update again.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted.

  • Save Fixlist.txt in the same folder where FRST64.exe is.

  • Close all program windows.

  • Launch the Farbar Scanner tool and click "Fix".

  • Upload the output log file (FixLog.txt) to your OneDrive.

Next, upgrade your OS from 21H2 to 22H2.

Upgrading to 22H2 should fix the Windows Update issues automatically.
