How do I stop Windows from restarting my computer, EVER?

I sometimes come back to my computer after a break or in the morning to see that all my programs have been closed down and all my work discarded. I have lost half a dozen unsaved text files with notes and to-do lists. I would have lost hours of client work because of this, if the program I was using didn't automatically keep backups.

I don't care what hours it considers "active." I don't want Windows to restart my computer without asking me, ever. No answer is not a yes.

If there's no way to stop this, please tell me how to disable updates entirely. Keeping my programs and files open between sessions is more vital to me than keeping this operating system updated.

Thank you for any help.

Have you gone Settings, System, Power and sleep and set the times to Never?

Hi Iros. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

See the latest ways to control Windows Update to see if they are sufficient:
https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/201...

If not and you need a break the only stable way to turn them off is to set a Metered Connection: https://www.howtogeek.com/226722/how-when-and-w...

There are no problems reported. But as there are important security and quality updates included I would take time each month to turn off Metered Connection and install all the Updates.

Set a System Restore point first: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

There are even good reports from users now who've had them shut off for awhile and only install the Version Upgrades twice a year from the Media Creation Tool which is the most stable method anyway, and includes all previous Updates rolled in. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thank you for your help, it looks like I will have to set my connection as metered and try to remember to update when I do other computer maintenance things every couple of weeks. I hope it doesn't interfere with anything.

I miss the days when Windows would just tell you there was an update and then let you choose to restart when you wanted to. Why would they get rid of that? Restarting my computer when I've put the computer in sleep mode is like walking into my office after I've gone home for the day and clearing everything off my desk. Why would anyone ever think that's okay?

Sorry to rant. Thanks again for your assistance.

I know how to make it so that my computer never sleeps or turns off and that is definitely not what I want to do. My problem is with Windows Update. I don't want my computer to sit on at full power all the time, that doesn't sound like it would be good for it.
