How do I prevent RAM Caching?

Is there a way to prevent RAM caching?

I have a total of 128GB of RAM. I noticed that everytime my PC starts using above 70GB of RAM programs and other simple tasks completely crash and are unresponsive.

Noticed that I have 50GB cached for some reason that are not being actively used.
Could that be the problem first of all?
And is there a way to prevent so much ram being cached?

Hello, Mariyan Atanasov

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

RAM caching is a technique used by operating systems to improve overall system performance by storing frequently used data in memory for faster access. However, too much RAM cache may cause you to experience problems where available memory becomes scarce and programs become unresponsive.

If you are experiencing problems with too much RAM cache causing your system to become unstable or unresponsive, you may want to consider the following:

1->Clear spare memory by hibernating and then waking up again

Since Win10 system hides the computer hibernation function by default, you can clear the spare memory by letting the computer hibernate first and then waking it up again. Since hibernation can save running tasks and continue working after waking up again, it is more practical. It's worth noting that hibernation will clear the spare memory, but sleep will not clear the spare memory because sleep does not stop power to the memory. Enter hibernation mode by holding down the Windows key and clicking Power.

2->Clean up with RAMMap

RAMMap. RAMMap is an advanced tool for Windows physical memory analysis. Go to the article here to download it:

Open the software and wait for the software to load successfully, select Empty - Empty Standby List to clear the spare memory as shown below:

3-> Close the automatic maintenance plan task

Windows10's automatic maintenance function in the running state will occupy a relatively high hard disk occupancy, CPU occupancy, which may make the computer become abnormally slow, or even unresponsive and crash and other conditions. The following is the specific programme to close the automatic maintenance plan task:

1, open the path: C: Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows

2, the folder "Defrag" renamed "Defrag.bak".

3, if you need to restore it to normal just delete the .bak suffix name.

Note: Make sure that the hidden items are currently ticked in the view tab of File Explorer, and then log in with an account that has administrator privileges. Otherwise you may be blocked from accessing the Microsoft folder.

4-> Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

This tool helps to check some of the parameters of your RAM setup and helps you to see if there are any problems with the memory sticks. To do this:

Press and hold Windows+ S > Search Windows Memory diagnostic tool and follow the steps to run it

5->Turn off virtual memory

Turning on virtual memory will dump some of the application's memory to the hard drive to avoid running out of physical memory. A low to mid-range computer with virtual memory turned on can run more efficiently. However, in the case of abundant physical memory, using virtual memory is not only ineffective, but will have the "side effect" of high hard drive occupancy to turn it off, follow these steps.

Press Windows key + R to open the Run window.

Type CMD to open the command prompt.

Copy and paste this command: fsutil behavior set encryptpagingfile 0.

Once done, restart your PC to apply the changes made.

We're keeping an eye to your reply regarding this issue.

6-> Temporarily disable Windows Search service

Windows Search is a Windows system search indexing service, which greatly speeds up the search for local files, however, Windows Search is a double-edged sword, bringing fast search, but also increase the hard disc read and write. Windows Search will read and write files on your hard drive in the background. If you don't use the function of searching for local files or seldom use it, you can turn it off for a while and observe how the problem manifests itself, to do this, you can also turn it off for a while.

Press and hold Windows+R > Type services.msc > Find the service of Windows Search and Right-click on it to select the Properties > Next, you can stop it first and Pause this service.

Please feel free to let me know if you got any further updates, thanks.
