How do I get rid of AVG to turn on Windows Defender

I am having trouble removing AVG to activate Windows Defender.  In fact, I have 2 AVG's on my system and do not know how or why?

Can someone tell me how I can make sure that AVG is removed?  The uninstall will not work.

@Robin Rabbit -

Have you searched 'Uninstall or change a program' from the Control panel to see if the application is listed?

Others have suggested removal programs here  (I have never used any of these) with great success.

Your best bet is to search for the vendors support forum for the application you want to remove.

Once you have all AV's removed - be sure to download latest signature and engine via Windows Update or by executing the following command : "%programfiles%\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe" -signatureupdate -http
