How do I disable Copilot and all Other AI functionality in Windows 11 PRO

I've tried the recommended steps for creating then setting the value for WindowsCopilot to 1, but the AI functions still return.

Help please.

Hello David, this is Emily.

In Settings> Personalization > Taskbar, you can turn off Copilot. However, if that's not enough and you wan to disable it completely, you will need to do this in registry.

To do so, launch Registry Editor, then go to

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

On the left, right click on the Windows folder, go to New > Key, name it "WindowsCopilot"

Then select WindowsCopilot, on the right, right click and create a DWORD value, name it "TurnOffWindowsCopilot" and set its value at 1.

Restart the computer to have the change take effect.

Hi Emily,

I made the registry change as you instructed and after restarting my computer, the A.I. component did not appear to be loaded.

However, the minute I logged into my Microsoft account in order to reply to you, the A.I. component reappeared. See the screen capture below.

Other thoughts?

Dave

The latest update to Edge apparently still shows Microsoft AI is poised and ready for action.

We're going to need a way (whether it's a registry key in HKLM, or some other way) to turn this off for all users, not just the current logged on user.

I added the registry key (in HKCU) to a Windows 11 Pro 23H2 VM, then restarted. After logging in, I was still able to launch CoPilot in Edge, and have CoPilot write a joke. So, the registry key does not disable CoPilot, certainly not in Edge.

It disabled it for me on the desktop which is what I care about. You can always uninstall Edge and use one of the other 5 or 6 popular browsers out there.

Copilot can be disabled, which is what I did, because I have a subscription to ChatGPT-4, but it cannot be removed, because artificial intelligence is now part of the operating system and, increasingly, part of everyday life. So disable it if you wish, however, I think the better choice is to learn how to live with it, because artificial intelligence, for better or worse, is the future, and no one can escape the future.

Preparation is the nemesis of failure.

I think the problem is with businesses that are under SOX or GLBA compliance regulations. CoPilot has the potential to "see" financial information and could send it to the cloud. This would violate those policies. Think tax preparers and accountants..

If this were a process that only ran locally, and NO INFORMATION OF ANY KIND WHATASOEVER was ever transmitted off of the local computer, to gawd-only-knows-who/where on the internet, then maybe I would agree with your sentiment.

However, seeing as this fad is merely the latest in a very long line of measures undertaken SPECIFICALLY to steal/garner/catalog as much information about you as is technically possible, at all times, the only sane response to being thusly assaulted by it is to say, NO EFFING WAY!
