How do I copy a DVD-R with old home made videos to my Windows 10 computer so it will play them from the computer files?

How do I copy a DVD-R with old home made videos (1999-2007) to my Windows 10 computer so it will play from the computer files as I want to backup all these old DVD's?

* The DVD will play with VLC media player from E Drive

* The DVD (E drive) only shows "files Ready to Be Written to Disc (1)" - desktop.ini file (configuration settings). There are no folders or anything else that appears.

* I tried right clicking on the "E" drive to copy it and pasting it to a new folder on my computer (a folder appeared within the new folder with the words "DVD RW Drive" but it's empty).  Also, when I tried to get VLC media player to open it from my computer, it doesn't work as it cant find anything in that folder.

* I don't understand why I can get the DVD to play from the E drive using the VLC media player but I can copy the DVD's content to my computer and play it.  I really want to have a backup of these DVD's and be able to save them to USB or watch them from my Windows 10 computer.

Hi Kim's. Thank you for reaching out. My name is Jayson, an Independent Advisor for Microsoft and a user just like you. I'll be glad to assist you.

Just want to inquire what type of movies you are trying to copy, is it a video file (*.mpeg4/.avi/.wma) copied to the DVD or a DVD movie? You need to rip/convert the DVD movie file to .mpeg4/.avi etc. so you can save it to USB drive or external HDD.

There are several paid applications with dedicated tools to do this but since you are already using VLC player, there is a built in converter in VLC player. Please see link below for the steps on how to convert.

Please take note that any movies that you convert should be for personal use only and not for commercial use. See the link below for more information about the legality.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more assistance.

Hi Jayson,

I really appreciate your assistance (& sorry for the delay) but I still cant get it to work.

I'm trying to remember how I got the video recordings onto the DVD-R.  I had a lot of videos of my kids, our wedding and other family events on VHS so I think I used it to get it onto the DVD's as I still have the VHS as well and they seem to match based on dates written on the front but I cant really be sure as it was a long time ago.  I know we did have a video camera but I think that was what I used to get it onto the VHS but once again, I cant be sure.  Then later I think we got a still camera that had a video option and had a type of SD card in it (I think it was called a PowerShot).

Because I cant see the information on the DVD's, it means I cant see the file type or extension.

My husbands laptop is also using Windows 10 but I noticed it has a different program for media which is called Cyberlink Power Media Player 14 so I'm not sure if that would be better to use then VLC.

When I used the VLC, I keep getting an error saying "Playback failure...DVD read could not read... /1-4 blocks at 0x69d3f." IT offers another pop up window that gives me the option of "Overwrite" or "Keep exisiting file" but the only option that works is overwrite.  Then it just deletes it and does the same thing again.  The DVD I tried this on has three menu items as it was a bunji jump, race car drive and sky diving.  When I tried to follow the instructions on my kids DVD's, it wouldn't even find them.

Thanks, Kim
