How can we get MPEG-4 files to work in Windows Media Player v10?

I see that MPEG4s are not necessarily supported in v10, but it mentions "DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs " from "Ligos LSX-MPEG Player" and "EnvivioTV".  When I check out Ligos, it does not seem that they support or offer the MPEG decoders any longer and I cannot find anything at Envivio.

Any other thoughts?  Getting everyone up to v11 might be an option, but I am also looking for other alternatives.

Thanks!

As you have discovered...
Windows Media Player is not natively compatible
with MPEG-4...see the following MSKB article:

(316992) Windows Media Player multimedia
file formats
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992/en-us
>scroll waaay down to MPEG-4 (.mp4)<

Might be worth a try to install a Codec Pack...

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)

*Proceed At Your Own Risk*

1) Info about CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)
http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

2) K-Lite Codec Pack (Full)
http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

And/or maybe one of the following freeware media
players would be worth a try...they will play just about
anything:

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)

VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/

GOM Media Player
http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10551786.html?tag=mncol;2

The following software is not freeware.

3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.2 Decoder
http://store.3ivx.com/3ivxStore/product_details.php?id=11

3ivx decoder
http://www.3ivx.com/download/

The 3ivx decoder components play back
most MP4, M4A, 3GP, MOV and AVI files
with MPEG-4 Video and MPEG-4 AAC Audio

Good luck...

Only WMP 12 has built-in support for MPEG-4. For WMP 11, you still need to install additional codecs/plug-ins for MPEG-4 support.
