How can I set a time to download updates?

Windows is downloading updates automatically. I have a quota per day from my ISP. Today, the quota is almost exhausted due to download of updates. As such I am unable to do my regular work. Else I have to buy extra data at higher price.

How can I schedule the download so as to accommodate it within my daily quota?

Hi Sharma,

To schedule an update in Windows 10, you'll need to enable that on your Windows update settings of your PC. For us to assist you, we recommend that you visit this article. From there, you'll see a simple guide on how to schedule your Windows update on your PC.

Let us know how it goes and if you need further assistance, feel free to post back.

The article is telling about installation and restart of the update.

I want windows to ask me before starting a download. In earlier versions it was possible. But now Windows is forcibly downloading updates without even my knowing when it is done.

I had to buy extra data twice during the last few months because of this automatic downloads.

I want a way to download updates at a convenient time to me, not the restarting AFTER download.

Further I am unable to toggle under "Schedule a time" under Restart options as the toggle key is inactive.

We appreciate the information that you have provided. For us to provide an accurate resolution for you to manually download updates on your computer, can you verify how is your computer connected to the internet? Is it via Wi-Fi connection or are you using an Ethernet cable?

We're looking forward to your response.

I am using a data card in a dongle to connect to the Internet. The app Mobile Partner connects / disconnects. The app also meters the consumption.

We appreciate the additional information that you have provided, Sharma. To prevent Windows Update to be downloaded automatically, we recommend that you set your internet connection as metered. If you want to download Windows update, you can just turn off metered connection so that your PC will download the latest Windows update. Here's a thread that you can refer to on how to set your connection as metered.

Kindly update us with the results and if you have further queries, feel free to post back.

I visited the thread and I tell you frankly that I cannot do all those settings.

Why can't Microsoft send a notification and ask for a convenient time to download it?

I am coming to a stage to abandon Windows and go for an alternate OS. I feel that now Windows is enslaving me. That is, it doesn't want to take command from me but it gives commands to me.

I paid and bought Windows 7 that was working fine in my laptop. Microsoft forced me to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge. Just because they gave it free, they cannot take away my rights. I never asked for an upgrade. It was forced on me. Last month they updated to the latest version. From then on I have problem or other every day. It is ruining my peace of mind. Now that we are used to working in computers, cannot keep that devil away also. I am in the state of holding a tiger's tail.

Sorry, I have come out with my woes.

I cannot do all what is said in the thread that you mentioned. I will just pull along and one day, who knows, I might break this laptop out of shear frustration.

Thank you for you patience. Sorry for taking your time.

Regards.

What a pitiful answer, and what an arrogant bunch of buffoons at MS. I'm so sick of windows f***ing with my computer all day long. You guys might actually be worse than Adobe. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I guess I'm going to have to familiarize myself with Mac; running my business is just too important to have to wait to run programs because windows needs to do 8 million things in the background constantly!

I am with you regarding the inconvenience and arrogance. I want the convenience of setting the time to download during my cheaper times and also to specify the regularity of downloads for example once a month or every second week (which is surely a better option than not at all which is what I have opted for now Microsoft?!!).

As this is the option I have chosen I have to deal with the 'update' pop-up at inconvenient times.

We do not all have the luxury of unlimited data and I live in a country which has one of the most expensive rates for data (South Africa). Because I cannot set a time I would have to sit up til 12 to initiate the downloads.

Perhaps you should take your customers into account MS.

I completely agree. Windows 10 updates mean I have to get up at 2am to start downloads. If this time was able to be scheduled life would be much simpler. In some months, I get no internet at all because of Windows downloads. They fail because of poor satellite connection, restart and chew up all my bandwith leaving me a connection that is nominally 128/128 but in fact is much slower then that. Most websites will not work at these low speeds so if the Microsoft download comes on the first day of my usage month, I have no internet at all for 30 days!. Try running a business under those conditions.

As others have siad, NOT ALL OF US LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE WE HAVE CHEAP FAST ACCESS TO THE INTERNET.

Please look after your customers, Microsoft.

I am person who works in customer support section in ISP. we got lots of blames from customers due to this windows update problems. allocated quota of most customers get utilized within the first two weeks. then they blaming at us. but when we checking it is due to windows update. so why Microsoft cant give a solution to this. why we cant schedule the download( twice a month in off - peak times). then customers can easily schedule these downloads to off - peak and there allocated quota will not get affected. waiting for early reply for this.
