How can I open an .art file?__

I have some old photos that are in the old .art format. I think that was an AOL format.
Windows Vista says unable to open.
Any ideas?

From an older PC I have transferred a number of .art and .lst text files to my newer Vista PC.

For files like that I use the right mouse knob and select Open With, then select Notepad.

And voila! The file shows up as a text file.

Before that I have previously created a shortcut to Notepad.exe and placed it in the folder for Program Files.

Then when you use Open With and Browse you will then among the files in the Program Files find Notepad and can click OK on that.

But later you will find Notepad among the default open programs, and not only that, the .art file will open just by clicking on it.

And amazingly, all .art files and .lst files in your folder will open by just clicking on it.

For another folder, you will again have to start with Open With.

But Notepad will still be among the default open programs.

Okay I did this and it just shows a string of nonsense characters. What is the real program that the .art file came from?

You don't have to own, subscribe, or otherwise entangle with AOL, just download the AOL software. Instead of signing on or starting an account, click on FILE, then OPEN. Be sure to save your .ART files as something (like .PNG or JPG, or .BMP) so you can get to them hereafter without needing AOL.
