HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B problem

Hi

Recently re-installed the operating system on my father's ageing Dell Dimension 3100 (Pentium 4, XP, Media Centre 2002, SP3, 504Mb).

The optical drive seems broken. It (very slowly) downloaded Works disc 1 then gave up the ghost subsequently. Won't read audio, CR-ROM or DVD. Troubleshooter says it's working fine, tried removing the lower filters (uppers weren't listed), uninstalled and re-installed the drive, everything seems ok on control panel. Tried blowing really hard to get rid of the dust. Nada.

Thoughts welcome!

Cheers

Andy

When you reinstalled the Operating system, did you follow the dell driver installation order as recommended by dell?

Dell driver install order.

Hi

Yes, though there was a load of drivers that I then needed to get from Microsoft - particularly for the internet connection (Intel PRO 100 VE etc.). Everything else worked ok (eventually), and all seems up to date.

The optical drive is rarely used, though it would be nice to have back.

I added a link to my previous post, You might want to take a look at it, and conclude that you need to switch out that model of optical drive with something more reliable.

Think you're right. Might take a peek at the Sonic software first, though both this PC and my own had Sonic and it was a pain in the backside.

So..... Dell do give details of a driver - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/19/DriverDetails?driverId=R130051 - but it's apparently dor the HL-DS rather than the HL-DT.

I'm guessing this won't work for me?

If you were directed to that link using your service tag number, the I would install that driver.

Dell service tag lookup.
