Help with widows update

My hard drive is out of space and I can't do any winows updates.  I bought an external SSD a and a 60 GB SD card hoping to go along with windows automatic solution to low disk space but Windows won't take either as an option for additional storage during the wizard.  I tried changing the folder for windows update using an article I found online (https://www.howtogeek.com/393423/how-to-change-windows-10-updates-download-folder-location/).  I get an error message, (0x80080005), whenever I go into settings to check for updates.  Additionally, Windows already had windows update stopped in task manager services.  I had to go into the services app and disable it to complete the steps in the article.  I then go back in to set it back to automatically.  then when I check for updates I get the above message.  I went back into task manager and saw it was stopped.  I tried starting windows update from task manager and it just flashed and went back to stopped.  I went into services where it was still set to automatic.  I went into the properties and tried starting it but got an error saying that I had an incorrect syntax.  I'm lost. Everything I've done seems like it should be working.

Hello my name is Adam and I am a Microsoft user like you and an Independent Advisor. I am very happy to help you with your problem.

We can try a couple of things. First is to clean up your internal HDs.
https://www.windowscentral.com/best-ways-to-fre...

If that guide doesn't clean up enough space then we can use the media creation tool and run the update from there.

(You might be able to use the external drive or the SD card instead of the USB drives. I will do a little research).

Thanks for trying to help.  I tried.  i can't free up enough space.  I tried creating installation media and got a message telling me I needed to create more free space in the C: drive.  Which I obviously couldn't do.

I was just wanting to see what HDs you had and how much each had left. I'm sorry I didn't explain well enough. I need you to click on the "This Pc" in the left side panel.

The sd card has 58 GB and the external has over 100 GB. The internal has about 3 GB.  Windows update needs 10 GB it says

Go through your apps and Uninstall apps you no longer need. If you are unsure if it is safe to remove please ask.

I did that already.  Researched and got rid of anything that wasn't needed and was taking up significant space.

Ok. An option would be to clone your internal HD to the external and make the external your boot drive until you can upgrade the internal drive.

If you would like to do that here is a guide...

to change your boot drive you will need to go into BIOS and change the boot device to your external drive. Depending on how it is hooked up to the computer (USB or esata or other) it could be slower than your current drive at loading.

One other option would be to Uninstaller apps from C and reinstall them on the external drive.
