hdmi to vga adapter not detected.

I bought a Ddmi to Vga adapter from Hp and used it on my Envy notebook to connect to an  external projector.  It worked for a few weeks and suddenly stopped working.  The laptop cannot detect the adapter again. What do I do? what did I do wrong?
