hdd gone raw

Hi There,

I have a western digital 2tb external hdd that was originally formatted ntfs, but has now gone raw. showing no label, or size. I really don't to have to format the drive, without first recovering the data, if possible. I have done a few searches on the internet, and this seems to happen on a regular basis, with external hdd, however I been using external hard drives for many years, and this is the first time, I've come across this problem. I would really like to know if there is any way of retrieving my data, and then reformatting to ntfs.

Regards andy

Answer

Hello Andy,

You're right in saying its not an uncommon problem. One approach that I and others have found is to use the freeware application Aomei Partition Assistant, download from here:  http://download.cnet.com/AOMEI-Partition-Assistant-Standard-Edition/3000-18512_4-75118871.html?tag=mncol;1 (make sure you use the Direct Download Link).

Though the app will reformat and / or partition your drive, the first step is to select the external drive in question and then select Properties. It is our mutual experience that this is often enough to get the drive recognized by Windows.

Another approach is to use the following Fix It troubleshooter, here:  http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Windows_USB_diagnostics .

Try these approaches and let me know if this fixes the issue for you.
