Having trouble with 3rd party apps.

So i was setting up my computer after a fresh install of windows 11 pro apparently on my new (yet sometimes crashing) SSD.

My issue is shortcuts (keyboard combos) on 3rd party apps i have installed are not working unless the app is open or running in background by being minimized or as an icon in taskbar. Like i have ShareX and i can't use hotkeys to quickly take a scrolling screenshot or screenrecording. But everything works fine if the app is open though.

Regular shortcuts work fine like PrtScr to bring up Snippingtool or Windows + R or Fn + F11 for fullscreen on browser apps, okay idk why i added that last 1 cause the browser app is open anyway. Like am i being a noob? Are these not supposed to work and only integrated apps on windows work and not 3rd party installed 1's?

Screenshot shortcut for another app 'Clip Clip' which is a Clipboard app also behaves the same way. But in addition it doesn't work at all unless the app is similarly open or minimized or in tray icons. The whole point of a clipboard app is to save everything text and images i copy. It only saves the latest 'Clip' of whatever i have copied before opening the app which i assume it does as i open it, but there is no history of the previous 'Clips', my brain tells me this is not how this should work but maybe that is how it is. Sorry for the crazy ramblings of a noob and thanks for any help.

Not sure if this is where i should post this or elsewhere cause when i choose Windows 11 ->Apps-> it only shows windowsapps / amazonappstore / Outlookmail\Calendar. So i went with windows apps but i might be wrong.

Hi Praveen.

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

In your description, you are using some third-party apps, and if you don't have the apps running in the background or minimized, you can't open them directly via shortcuts.

I do understand your desire to make it easier to use third party apps or tools.

If I understand you correctly, then what you may be experiencing is a normal situation. When these third-party apps are not opened or not running in the background of the system, the related components and functions are not started, so these apps can't respond correctly according to your shortcut keys or some other behaviors, only after you start these apps or tools, the related components start to run continuously the system detects your behaviors uninterruptedly, and at this time you can make these third-party tools available to you through shortcut keys or other This time you can use shortcuts or other special behaviors to make these third-party tools or applications respond correctly. This is by design.

In addition, when you try to run some apps in the background, please refer to the following steps to set the permission for it to run in the background as Always

1 Right-click the Start button and select Settings

2 Click Apps>Installed apps>Apps you need to run in the background

3 Find Background apps permissions and set Let this app run in background to Always.

You can also try to set a shortcut to open these apps via their shortcuts by following the steps below

If there’s already a shortcut on your desktop, right-click it.

If there isn’t a shortcut, right-click the application’s executable file (.exe file), select “Send to” > “Desktop (create shortcut)”.

  1. Open the shortcut properties:

    • Right-click the shortcut and select “Properties”.

  2. Set the shortcut key:

    • In the “Properties” window, go to the “Shortcut” tab.

    • In this tab, you’ll see a field labeled “Shortcut key”.

    • Click this field, then press the key combination you’d like to use as the shortcut (e.g., Ctrl + Alt + S).

    • Windows will automatically detect and record this key combination.

  3. Save the settings:

    • Click “Apply”, then click “OK” to save the changes.

In addition, your needs deserve to be noticed by the development team. Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience, you can submit your ideas and suggestions through the Feedback Hub, and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.

Please share the feedback link here after submitting as it will allow others on the forum to vote for your submission, including me. More votes will lead to more visibility and higher priority to the development team.

Hiyo,

Well....................i tried the feedback hub thingy but there are so many people with so many complaints and also i can only write 2 paragraphs to explain? It is grossly insufficient space, i doubt they even gonna look given how glitchy and half transitioned windows 11 is from windows 10 to whatever kinda operating system they are actually tryna create. But i did try, 1 of them popped up but the other 1 just disappeared and doesn't seem to have been posted nor is it in my drafts so ..there's that.

Anyway i was afraid you would say that but that just seems so ridiculous cause 3rd party apps have always worked why would they stop now/ be restricted by windows for security reasons? That's incredulous like what, 3rd party apps can't even give me notifications now? surely that is NOT normal, i mean android works smoothly. I am just regretting not just going with windows 10 instead of 11.

So apparently if i go to 'installed apps' only integrated or microsoft store apps have app settings via 'additional options' to change background settings and also all apps have a modify option which is grayed out for some reason? Why is it even there then. And therefore i can't change the background activity for 3rd party apps under battery section either. I swear windows 11 was made to annoy and make people rage/pissed.

I mean what is the point? The whole reason for windows not giving full functionality like scrolling screenshot and editing/formatting and limitless saving and other features in clipboard is to promote 3rd party app usage and for developers to make these apps. And your gonna go and make them not work?

Whole point of installing 3rd party app is cause inbuilt clipboard is useless. Like when i was testing things to make sure i had my facts right before posting my last query. I opened my windows clipboard there were 2 screenshots copied to it. I took 3 more screenshots that got saved. But when i closed and reopened the clipboard they disappeared and only the afore mentioned 2 were remaining. i...... i.. in what words do i explain my frustration? In what universe does that even make sense. It is just bad and glitchy and oh so unreliable.

I guess i will just have to trial and error till i find my own solution i guess. I mean a clean fresh install of windows should not have this kinda user experience jeez. I saw somewhere that i can change reg key or use command prompt to allow background app activity in general but that seems not wise what if i get something on my pc that drains my battery or cpu?

Enough of my rambling/venting thank you for replying to a noob.

carpe diem,

Praveen
