Getting Windows update error 80073712 on windows 7

Original title: Windows-7  update. Error 80073712

Unable to get windows  update despite Genuine Win 7 Home premium. It shows error 80073712. Tried troubleshoot by their trouble shooter and fix it but error keeps on coming. Do I need reinstall of Win 7. It is a Dell Laptop Inspiron N5010

Is it System Update Readiness Tool?

If you see Windows Update Error 80073712, then it occurs when the Windows component store is corrupt. The component store holds the files and information that's used to install updates.

Suggest you refer the Windows Update error 80073712 and see if it helps you in fixing the issue. If you have tried the suggestion already and getting same error, then try the below steps.

Step :1

a. Press Windows Key + X.
b. Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)

Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for UAC(User Account Control).
c. Type following commands into the command prompt one after the other 

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

net stop cryptsvc 


Keep Command Prompt window opened.

Step :2

Rename Windows Update folders 

At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command:


ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old


Then type the following, commands and then press ENTER after each command:

net start wuauserv

net start bits

net start cryptsvc

Close the Command Prompt window and check if you can install the updates.
