Getting error 8DDD0020 from Windows update Catalog

I am getting error 8DDD0020 from Windows update Catalog. Even if I click on the the FAQ or help link or even do a search, I initially get the correct screen and then it switches to the screen:

The website has encountered a problem
[Error number:8DDD0020]

I have no issues in downloading updates from support.microsoft.com/downloads that require authentication.

I ran the FixIt from KB971058 [non-drastic]. See http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/78f70b81-bd24-47b2-8f33-bdd4a69143f0

I also did a reset on the security settings in IE.

Any chance it is an authentication issue related to the ActiveX that is installed for the catalog? How to reset or update it?

2. Norton Internet Security

4. Nope

5. Fully updated

I think it is an issue specific with the catalog site or something with it.

As i said, any way to re-install the ActiveX used?

This issue is recent. Within the last month. I've had no [major] changes in the system.

Your suggestions ended up being incorrect.

I did a full reset of IE8 [32-bit BTW; Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab -> Reset] and I don't have the issue anymore. [I don't like to do a full reset unless I have to.]

As I said at the beginning, I think there was something odd with the ActiveX and this "result" points towars that.

Well, you were leaning towards a Norton issue.

Which "first" reset? I only did the reset in the "February 09, 2011 9:11 PM" message.

I began getting this error AFTER installing IE10 on Windows 7 Professional X64 and it happens whether I use 32-bit IE or 64-bit IE.  The error happens on two different computers.  Resetting IE Settings did not fix.  Uninstalling IE10 reverting to IE9 makes the error go away. 

The behavior on the catalog.update.microsoft.com site is that it displays the error message, despite the error message I can type something in the search box, see results which quickly refresh to the error.

I do not, nor have I EVER had Norton anything installed on my computer.

This thread predates the release of IE10 for Win7 by over a year. That being said...


There is no IE10 32-bit (assuming you don't disable Enhanced Protected Mode). I just encountered the same issues in IE11 on Windows 7. The problem was resolved by simply trying the same once again.

I added "product" to the basket. Clicked on the basket, got the error. Clicked again, got the page. Clicked to  download, got popup page with the error. Clicked again, got popup page with the prompt where to download. Then downloaded successfully.

Having looked at these Microsoft support pages for over a decade, I have yet to see one reply from Microsoft-affiliated person, be it MVP or their India-based "support", which would be 1% relevant. If the help comes, it always comes from other users, while the posts by MS-affiliated folks are always on the level of scripted "restart your computer, clear your browser cache, disable your antivirus" and such. I guess that's how they earn some "community" points gauging their loyalty to Microsoft.
