File search problem with windows 10

In Windows 10 file explorer, I am not able to find files that I know exist. Specifically, this happens when I search with the option of searching with file name as shown in the screenshot below. You may see that I searched for files with "decade" in the file name. The search shows 4 files in the indexed location. However, I know that there are other files with "decade" in the file name AND that these are in the same indexed location as the ones which have shown up.

You can see the additional files below. Image

All these files are in the same folder, but yet, some show up when I search in the file explorer, and some don't .

I don't know why this happens. Any solutions would be highly appreciated. I DID NOT HAVE THIS TROUBLE IN WINDOWS-7!

Thanks,

J

Hi Jagatth,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. I understand your concern and I am glad to assist you.

Appreciate you for attaching the screenshot as well.

I would suggest you to run the search and indexing troubleshooter and check

  1. Type troubleshooter in the search bar and click on it.

  2.  Click view all in the left panel.  Select ‘search and indexing' and follow the on-screen instructions to being troubleshooting.

If this still does not work, you might want to Rebuild the Index.

Press WinKey+X to display the system menu and open Control Panel/Indexing Options.

Select the Advanced button and click the Rebuild button. This will delete the current search index and rebuild it from scratch.

Note: The indexing is designed to work best when the computer is idle. If user activity is detected, the indexing will pause and wait for an idle condition before starting again.

Hope this post is helpful. Get back to us with the results. We are happy to help. Your response is important to us.

This answer, neglected to answer the problem with doing a sinple search, like searching a drive for files with an extension of MP3..... it goes through the process but never shows any results . whats wrong with this NEW version of Windows10 ?  is it possible for Microsoft to fix these things or rerelease a version that does work. my android phone works better than this version of Windows.

As of this point Win 7, 8, and 10 leaves much to be desired in operating systems! Windows XP and 2000 seem to be the best so far!

I just installed Windows 10 and the instructions to do a search are wrong.  You say "type troubleshooter into the search bar."  What search bar??  The one in file explorer??  I have no search bar in my tray.  The instructions ( that were displayed to me when it first installed and I can't find again) say to hit the start button and then hit search.  I have no start button to hit?

Windows search has not worked since XP.

Joy Kemprai,

I tried these methods. Still, the problem is not resolved. I am unable to retrieve files that I know are there and indexed.

I feel that it was a mistake to shift from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Regards,

1. You don't click on troubleshooter, but troubleshooting.

2. Alfter WinKey+X, there is no Control Panel/Indexing Options, only Control Panel.

3. On the Control Panel window there is no Advanced button.

I not only have a problem searching for files but I can't change drives for file history and I can't load my Windows back up files on a removable disk . I mean I can't change the settings from DVD to a USB . It may have something to do with all the error reports and applications that have stopped working.

Hi Kenneth,

Sorry for the delayed reply.

What happens when you try to change the drive?

Try to run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter and check.

  1. In Search window type Troubleshooting and click on it to open it.

  2. Click on System and Security.

  3. Then click on Search and Indexing. Follow onscreen steps.

If the issue persists, then try to run SFC scan and check if it works.

Try to run the following commands and check if it helps.

  1. Open command prompt. (Type it in Search or Press Windows Logo Key+X. Click on Command Prompt admin).

  2. Type the following 4 commands at the CMD prompt: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    sfc /scannow

    powershell

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

  1. Close the CMD window.

  2. Check to see if the issue is resolved. If not, restart the PC.

Refer to More Options in the link below to change the drive.

Backup and restore your files:

You are still failing to answer the original question:  Please tell us in step-by-step fashion, how to do a search for a file, when using recently downloaded and installed Windows 10.  Don't tell us to use items that are not available on Windows 10.

You are replying to a 3 month old thread that normally will not get a reply.  I only mention this since you are a newly registered user.

Regarding the searching issue the first step I would do is to make sure that indexing is turned on for all files/folders.  By default they are not.
