File explorer opening the OOBE at first launch/use of feature after boot

Hello everyone,

I'm having a strange issue since the last update, every time I first use any feature in windows explorer (opening the file explorer, opening the right click menu, ...) it crashes and gives me an OOBE blank page with a spinner. After 5/10 seconds, it closes automatically and restarts the explorerwith all file explorer windows closed.

I tried clearing the cache, searching for updates, the sfc /scannow command found errors and repaired them but it didn't solve my issue.

I'm at a loss for answers now and am asking for your help in finding what can be the cause of this very wierd issue.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi MirrorBrain, hope you're doing well. I'm Ian, and I'm happy to help you today.

Based on what you've described, it seems like there may be a problem with the Windows OOBE (Out Of Box Experience) feature that is causing the file explorer to crash. One possible solution to this issue is to try resetting the OOBE feature. Here's how you can do it:

1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type "regedit" and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
3. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\oobe
4. Right-click on the "OOBEInProgress" DWORD value and select "Modify".
5. Change the value data from 1 to 0 and click "OK".
6. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

You can also use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. See Microsoft link below.

After resetting the OOBE feature, try using the file explorer again and see if the issue persists. If it does, there may be a deeper issue with your Windows installation that requires further troubleshooting.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks, I didn't have the registry key oobe in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status as you said, but I created it and put the DWORD in it as mentionned. Sadly it didn't solve the issue, I then tried the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command as seen in the System File Checker tool, but that didn't work either. I don't understand why it does that as I didn't modify anything and just updated via windows update.

If you have any other ideas I am ready to try them out :)

To help for the further troubleshooting, here are the infos on my windows install :

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

4. Let the command complete, restart your system then.
