Fatal Error C01A001D applying update operation 103491 of 112831

Original title: Fatal error during update

I restarted both my windows 8 laptops to refresh them about 1.5 hours ago.

Both started updating.

One (this one) completed.

The other one started and seemed to be going ok when this message appeared:

Fatal Error C01A001D applying update operation 103491 of 112831 (\Reg...)

The little dial kept whirling and after about 15 minutes the machine went off or to sleep ( i could not tell because nothing was showing)

I restarted the machine and it started updating again but stopped with the same message.

What can I do?

Hi David,

I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.I will certainly help you with this issue.

I would like to know if you are you able to boot to the desktop.

This issue may occur if any Windows Updates failed to install.

We can try these methods below and check.

Method 1: Check in safe mode and clean boot mode of the computer.

Step 1: Check in Safe mode

Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. The words Safe Mode appear in the corners of your monitor to identify which Windows mode you're using.

Refer the link below:

Start your computer in safe mode

You can restart the computer to put it back in normal mode.

If the issue doesn’t occur in safe mode, follow step 2.

Step 2: Perform Clean Boot

Placing your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Try to reboot the system and check if it helps.

If the issue still persist follow method 2.

Method 2: Perform Automatic repair using a recovery disc.

Automatic Repair can detect and fix certain types of system problems that might prevent Windows from starting, such as missing or damaged system files.

If you have Windows 8 bootable DVD or USB drive then using the same perform a Startup Repair and check if that helps.

You can follow the steps below to perform Automatic Repair

  1. Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8 from it.

  2. In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.

  3. Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.

  4. Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.

Hope this information is helpful. If the issue still persists, please post back for further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

Thank you
