Failure of Generating System Health Report: The wait for the report generation tool to finish has timed out.

Each time I attempt to Generate a System Health Report (Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit), I get this

An error occured while attempting to generate the report.

The wait for the report generation tool to finish has timed out.

I've searched community posts and none refer to 'timed out' as the cause

Any ideas anyone (I've already tried all the other suggested fixes - no success).

Hi,

-What troubleshooting steps have you performed so far?

Try these steps:

Step 1: Generate the report from Command Prompt.

a)      Click on the Start button and type Command Prompt in the Search Field.

b)      Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.

c)      Type perfmon /report and press Enter.

Note: This will take 60 seconds to generate the report.

Step 2: Try generating the report in Clean Boot and check if the issue is resolved.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflictsHere is the link for your reference to perform clean boot.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After Clean Boot troubleshooting step, refer to “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with Clean Boot” from the article.

Step 3: You can try running a SFC scan and check. This issue may occur if a particular system file is missing or corrupt.

The System File Checker tool in the following KB article:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Let us know the status of the issue. If you need further assistance, please post back. We will be glad to help you.

Regards,
Anil

Troubleshooting steps taken:

A.  system file check (as administrator) -

       C:\Windows\system32>SFC /SCANNOW

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

B. Clean boot - NO CHANGE - STILL ERRORS
C. new user account - NO CHANGE
D. system restore - NO CHANGE
E. check disk (SEAGATE DISK DIAGNOSTICS) - NO PROBLEMS FOUND
F. disk cleanup - NO CHANGE

G. Deleted "C:/perflogs/system/diagnostics' folders - NO CHANGE - Continues to show error screen

NOTE: Even though there's the error screen, there was however a new folder created in

                          C:/perflogs/system/diagnostics'

Considering each of these steps DID NOT resolve this error, ya think someone in Microsoft could look at this 'TIME OUT' condition.... or is that too much to ask?

Mac45,

I would suggest you to check if you face the same issue in different user account or new administrator account. You may create a new user account on your computer and then check.

Create a new user account-
http://Windows.microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/Create-a-user-account

If you do not face the same issue in a new user account then you may refer the below link and use the steps provided to fix a corrupted user profile -

Apparently I must have miscommunicated.  To reiterate: Tried that......   Didn't work.

Mac45,

Apologies, did not notice it. The issue may be caused also by your security program such as anti-virus which might have conflicting settings as to not to perform certain tasks. I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and check the result again. You would need to turn on the security programs again which you had disabled.
Disable antivirus software:
http://Windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

If the issue persists, you may also perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099/en-us

Note: Make sure you take complete data back before performing in-place upgrade.

Regards,
Anil

I also have been having the same problem as of late, have tried all the above fixes to no avail. Does this have anything to do with a recent update?

Richard,

If this issue is caused after installing Windows Updates, you can perform system restore and check if it fixes the issue. If yes, then install updates one after the other by placing the computer in Clean Boot.

Note: After Clean Boot troubleshooting step, refer to “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with Clean Boot” from the article.

I have even tried Clean Boot but it does not help. This problem also has happened after recovering my laptop as new, It is something to do with windows itself and I am very disappointed. Please help!
