F:\ The directory name is invalid

I updated to Windows 10 and now I'm getting frequent error messages saying "F:\ The directory name is invalid" and "G:\ The directory name is invalid" I'm not sure what my F:\ and G:\ drives are. I can't find anything about them on my computer. These error messages pop up out of nowhere. Any idea why I'm getting them or what I can do to stop them?

Hi Elle,

Thank you for being a part of Windows 10.

I appreciate you for providing details about the issue and we are happy to help you.

Try the following methods and check if it helps:

Method 1:

I suggest you to run check disk on the hard drive to see if there are any corruptions.

Follow the below steps:

  1. Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER

chkdsk /f

Disclaimer: While performing check disk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found then check disk will try to repair that sector. Any data available on a bad sector might be lost.

Once Check Disk completes, boot the computer and then check.

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Method 2: Perform a Clean Boot and find out which application/service is causing this issue.

A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts and to determine what is causing the problem. Perform a clean boot on the computer by following the steps given in the link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: The steps for Windows 8.1 applies to Windows 10.

Disclaimer: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Reference: Refer to the following Microsoft article on Windows 10 help & how-to.

Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with Windows. We are glad to assist you.

Thank you.

I tried both methods and the problem persists, even during a clean boot. I have noticed that I only get the messages when the computer is woken from sleep mode, although sometimes there will be multiple messages on my screen when I wake it up.

Do you have either drive letters shown in Quick access. Have they been USB drives in the past.?

I receive the same error (except mine is E:\).  On my laptop drive E is my built in SD card reader that does not have a card in it.  No idea why I'm getting this error.  It never happened with Windows 7 or 8, 8.1.
