Extract all is greyed out on windows 10 windows explorer when trying to unzip a file

hi, i am trying to unzip a file without using a third party solution. in windows explorer, i right click on the zip file, i then see the extract / compressed folder tools, and the "extract all" is greyed out.
thanks for any advice
Hi, I'm David an independent advisor and user just like you. I'll do my best to help you with this.

It's possible that your default ZIP handler isn't defined. If you go to START > Settings (the cog) > Apps > Default Apps. Scroll to the bottom of that list and look for "Choose default apps by file type". If you then look down that until you find ".ZIP" make sure the default is selected to "Windows Explorer".

This can happen if you previously had a 3rd party ZIP handler and have uninstalled it.

Thanks David. it seems like because a third party 30 day trial was up. it seem like this prohibited the "extract all" button.

i went to control panel and uninstalled all of winzip. then i went back to windows explorer and tried to unzip the file again, when i right clicked "extract" was in the context menu, and, the button at the top was clicked out.

i think windows should have a fix to keep third party stuff from interfering with its native functions. OR winzip could be considered a virus or something.

Glad it sounds like you have found a resolution to the problem! Windows gives the user freedom to choose their own default apps which on occasion can cause problems like you have encountered. But at least the problem is solved.
