External hdmi monitor not working on windows 11

Hi,

I have a windows 11 system running on a dell Inspiron 7580 notebook. I cant get an external monitor working on hdmi port in windows 11.

Some tests I made:

1- Using ubuntu 22 booting from a usb pendrive - I can get it work on hdmi and usb-c port, even simultaneously.

2- Using windows 11, 1 monitor in usb-c port and other monitor in hdmi port. Various combinations of cables and monitors: Hdmi monitor doesnt work.

Windows "pops" when hdmi connection is made, recognizes it in device manager and , my mouse can go to any monitors but Hdmi always show black screen without signal.

Its important to mention that I have to take the ssd from my older notebook and insert in this new notebook, so its probably a problem with drivers. I tried many driver updates from dell, nvidia and windows but i didnt worked for me.

Is there something else I can try?

Welcome to the Microsoft Community

Understanding your problem, use HDMI display

Update Windows 11 and drivers:

Make sure your Windows 11 system is the latest version and check and update all drivers through Windows Update.

Re-graphics driver:

Press Win+X to select Device Manager to find your graphics card, right-click to uninstall the device and check to delete the driver for this device, then restart the computer. The system will automatically install the corresponding driver. If it is not installed, please go to the graphics card manufacturer's support page to manually download and install it.

Check the device manager:

Find the display adapter in the device manager and make sure there is no yellow exclamation mark or driver error.

Confirm the display settings:

Right-click the desktop and select "Display Settings".

In the "Multiple Displays" section, make sure "Extend these displays" is selected and confirm that the resolution is set correctly.

Check whether the display arrangement is correct. Sometimes you need to adjust the relative position of the display to display properly.

Switch the display output mode:

Use the shortcut key Win + P to try to switch the display mode (PC screen only, copy, extend, second screen only) to see if the HDMI display can be activated.

Adjust graphics card settings:

Use the graphics card's control panel tool (such as NVIDIA Control Panel) to manually detect the monitor and set it up

BIOS/UEFI settings:

Make sure the HDMI port is not disabled in the BIOS or UEFI. Some laptops allow certain ports to be enabled or disabled in the BIOS.

If the monitor has multiple input sources, you can manually select the HDMI input.

Reinstall Windows 11:

Since you mentioned that you migrated from an old laptop to an SSD, there may be compatibility issues with the system files. It is recommended to back up important data and try a clean installation of Windows 11.

Consult Dell Technical Support:

If the above methods still cannot solve the problem, it is recommended to contact Dell Technical Support, especially because your laptop model has specific hardware configuration and driver requirements.

Contact me if you need anything else.

Best wishes
