Every time I login to my PC a screen advertising Game Pass appears. How do I stop this?

I bought a new PC recently and have Windows 11 installed. After a recent upgrade force by Microsoft, I now receive a full screen ad for Game Pass every time I log in to my PC. There appears to be no way to decline this product and stop the ad from appearing. I'm nearly 70, have no kids in my house and have no interest (and I mean NO interest) in using Game Pass. Yet I have to decline the offer EVERY time I log in. Microsoft seems to no longer offer phone support to home users, so this community approach may be my only hope for relief. Does anyone know how to stop this Game Pass screen from appearing? Thank you.

Hi, JulieH2425,
Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue.

Disabling the option "Automatically launch app at startup" in the Xbox app settings should disable the Game Pass advertising.

1-Click on Start, search for the Xbox app, and click on that
2-Click the Profile/Sign-in menu item at the top-left of the screen
3-Then click on Settings
4-Click on General in the left panel
5-Then uncheck the option "Automatically launch app at startup" under Startup settings
6-When finished, close the Xbox app and should not see this advertising again

Hi, I had this same problem, and I found that I had to do the following to get rid of that very ANNOYING Xbox screen:

1-Click on Start and search for the Xbox app (typing "xb" is usually enough)

2-RIGHT click on the Xbox app item

3-From the right click menu, select App settings

4-Turn off the "Runs At Log-In/Xbox App Services" setting. Mine was was set to On

That did it.

Note: I'm running Windows 11 Home

This is rediculous as I never asked for nor downloaded the x-box app. The fact that the settings for me in an app I never downloaded has such a setting for me is clearly an unscrupulous sales ploy by Microsft, and probably not legal.

I been a linux user for a long time now, recently I bought a windows laptop and before installing linux I wanted to give windows 11 a try.

Among other things I stumbled with this xbox ad on every boot which not only is annoying, it is plain stupid. Cheers to the brain-dead developer that thought it was a good idea.

Also the Edge-down-your-throat browser thing...

The ad settings in you OS. I want a OS to work not to see ads, relevant or not.

See you never windows.

Developers do what the executives say to do, they don't make decisions like this.

Agreed, it's brain-dead and horrible.

This started happening to me on the windows PC I use at work. It does not have the XBOX App installed, but does have two other xbox related apps listed: Xbox Console Companion, and Xbox Game Bar. I have tried removing app permissions from both of them, for all that I could find in the "Advanced Settings". Will have to wait and see if that solves it for me.

Notable that if I open the Xbox Console Companion app, it suggests I download the new Xbox App for Windows 10, so I suspect it's probably the closest thing of the two I see.

In my system, there is no option to set it to "Off". It reads under "Lock screen notifications" that the App (Xbox Console Companion) "can show lock screen notifications". When I select the option to change those, I am transported to "Lock screen settings," where I can change nothing whatsoever.

Hi Robinson Silvestre,

this might work for people who have the Xbox app installed. The ad, unfortunately, also appears for those who have a simple Windows 11 installation like me, with "Xbox Console Companion" apparently part of that system. Isn't all that against EU law? This auto-installed software, and its annoying ads that nobody can opt out of?
