Original Title:Error number: 0x80244004

I'm getting the following message when trying to use Microsoft update:

[Error number: 0x80244004] The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the webpage you are trying to view.

I've downloaded the Windows Update Automated Troubleshooter, but it's a file type that none of my programs can apparently recognize or open (.diacab). All of the third party programs that open this type of file are $30.00. I imagine there was a program or app that could have recognized this file, within the Windows software, but I don't know the specific one or where to download it. Nothing comes up on Microsoft.com when I search for .diacab. Of course, I don't even know if that would fix the issue even if I could run it.

The main reason I'm trying to fix this is I've been trying to get Zune downloaded for my Windows Phone to sync to this computer, and it always stops when checking for updates, because of an issue with Microsoft Update. I initially got around Microsoft Update by disabling it and just running Windows Update so I could at least download all of the critical updates (like finally being able to update XP to Service Pack 3).

Before I disabled Microsoft Update the first time, this was the error I was getting previously:

Error number: 0x80072F8F Your computer's date and time appear to be out of sync with an update certificate.

I tried fixing it by following the instructions I found on this page though I also looked for the most recent Root Certificate download as this page was from 2009.

I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware last week for this previous error, which cleaned out about 21 infections, one of which was a root kit. I'll just go ahead and run another full scan for my current error and see if that turns up anything.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice! Have a great day!

A Rootkit is difficult to remove, (it may morph and change identity on your OS) and many IT professionals recommend a reinstall of the OS to ensure the rootkit is removed. You can try some steps that may remove from your computer and then make a decision as to whether you need to reinstall.

If you back up your files at this time, remember you might be also backing up the rootkit so plan accordingly.

Your safest option is to seek assistance from MS Support and I recommend you let them advise you in this matter:

Select “I think my computer is infected”. From there, select the email or phone option. You can also use

If you are in North America, you can call MS Support at 866-727-2338 for help with virus and spyware infections.

For international information see your <<local subsidiary support site>>.

OR

Go to Hitman Pro:

<<http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro>> This is a 30 day trial version of a pay product; if the program works and you like the program and decide to purchase it, that is your option.

and/or

Try TDSS Killer: <<http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363>> TDSS Killer is probably a "weapon of choice" against Rootkit and many users report success using this program.

If the above steps are not successful, you could also seek assistance at Virtual Doctor Forums - they are quite good at malware removal: <<http://discussions.virtualdr.com/forumdisplay.php?71-Intensive-Care-Unit>>

Good luck...

Thanks, I tried it and while it said it fixed an issue with Windows Update, I'm still encountering the same error.

Well, I did another full scan with Malwarebytes, and there were no viruses or rootkits this time. I will try some of your steps when I have time later this evening. Thanks!

Hi,

Set the computer to clean boot state to check for software conflicts.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

NOTE: After using the clean boot to resolve your problem, you may follow the ‘Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state’ to configure Windows XP to start normally.

Disable all security software temporarily, if they are turned ON.

Also, try the steps suggested in the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958053/en-us

Hope the information helps. Keep us updated on the status of the issue.

Ok, so I did a clean boot successfully with no issues, but the problem still occurs. I then registered all of the DLL files on the other page you linked to, yet the problem still occurs. I ran the Fix It program again, and again it stated there were problems with Windows Update and that they were fixed, but still the issue occurs. HOWEVER, I disabled Microsoft Update, and ran Windows Update without any problems. I believe I've downloaded every single critical and optional update for Windows XP (through SP3 which is what I needed to get Zune). I then went and downloaded the most recent version of the Zune Launcher which allowed me to finally sync my Windows Phone to this computer (which in turn allowed me to finally copy over the mp3s on the computer I wanted to have on my phone to listen to), so I've managed to download the software I originally needed, while the issue still occurs with Microsoft Update.

I plan on getting a new computer sometime in the next three to six months, which may or may not be before I have to deal with this issue again. I'm still interested in fixing it, but it's no longer a high priority. Thanks to everyone who has helped!
